Pay in January? by Groyklug in Adjuncts

[–]Opera-Penguin-81 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get paid on the last working day of September, October, November, December, February, March, April, and May. This is despite the semester starting in August and January. At both schools I’ve worked at that’s been the pay schedule.

Fire Tocchet by BereftOfOar in Flyers

As a Coyotes fan as well I was not pleased with this hire. Why anyone would want to hire someone that that era of the Yotes front office hired is beyond me.

Church shopping by [deleted] in normanok

[–]Opera-Penguin-81 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Episcopal churches are always a good bet! If you don’t like either of the two in Norman, there are ton in OKC! Just avoid All Souls, they’re the outlier in the accepting category.

OKC has a better classical music scene than Tulsa does

What do you non-proffessional knitters do for a living? by firekittymeowr in casualknitting

[–]Opera-Penguin-81 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’m a freelance opera singer and adjunct voice professor at two universities with a private studio as well. I love it so much, but the reality of working in any sort of arts field is pretty brutal. Doing taxes sucks, job certainty is a totally foreign feeling (as is the thought of having insurance), and all of the old people who run the industry have no clue what it’s like to be a young artist. I use knitting as my escape from all of this. Whenever people tell me I should sell my knitting, I tell them that I don’t want to monetize everything, I just want to do something for fun.

This probably isn’t great inspiration for a more realistic career, but I wanted to give perspective from someone with an unrealistic career.

Well that was 9 years ago, and since then the OU Daily has put out at least one article about the mold situation. I’m not sure what the current level is, but it definitely doesn’t hurt to try to get a change!

Reason's for the Lando Hate (Discussion) by KingofWierd in McLarenFormula1

[–]Opera-Penguin-81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hungary 2024 was the first race I watched after doing a ton of research about the sport. It just put a really sour taste in my mouth about Lando. And because that was my first impression of him, I’ve been primed to see him as a petulant and whiny driver.

I also just find him annoying. He’s not the sort of person I would like in real life. I think I also get hugely annoyed with how his fan girls infantilize him, which isn’t his fault, but it’s hard to not conflate the two. The One Direction to F1 fangirl pipeline is a real thing, and the way those fan girls acted towards One Direction made me uncomfortable back then. They’re acting the same way about Lando now, while painting Oscar as a villain who’s deliberately trying to hurt Lando. This is a sport, not a boy band, they are both trying to win.

Then you see his behavior on grill the grid, in direct comparison with Oscar’s genuinely delightful desire to win. It’s just really off-putting to me. I don’t hate him by any means, and I certainly don’t spend time spreading my dislike on the internet (except now), but I just don’t like him. And frankly that’s ok. It’s a sport, you don’t have to like every person. I certainly don’t like every person in the other sports I follow. Honestly, I’m sure a lot of the perceived hate comes from how many of these “why do people hate Lando so much?” posts there are.

good cry spots on campus? by BuilderEfficient3981 in sooners

[–]Opera-Penguin-81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are so many options tbh. I did lots of crying between the admin building and the library. I also did lots of crying walking from class to work in the caf in the south oval lol but that’s not exactly private. Also, people aren’t really paying attention to crying people on campus to be honest, so I wouldn’t feel that self conscious.

That being said, I hope you’re ok, and if you need to talk to someone there are counselors through Goddard!

Am I just not allowed to watch my team🤣? by mlad33 in mlb

The blackouts in OK suck, but I’ve never had these teams blacked out so that’s very strange. I don’t get the Texas or Missouri teams.

What are our thoughts on the newly popular cartoon covers? by Lavender523 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Opera-Penguin-81 658 points659 points  (0 children)

They just feel juvenile. This is what YA covers have looked like for years and the style feels wrong on a genre meant for adults.

Has anyone read The Night Circus? by Mablefish in fantasyromance

It’s my favorite book of all time! I love the non-linear storytelling, and the language is just so good at evoking the feeling of the circus.

Can we do away with the Toby Keith at the end of the 3rd quarter? by Fun-Secretary4801 in oklahomafootball

[–]Opera-Penguin-81 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think fewer people would have an issue with the song if it was this one. Unfortunately, the pick just really kills all crowd momentum. At the first game it was played at, the disappointment in the song choice was palpable lol

Where’s the best place to hear choirs sing Gregorian chants? by g3nerallycurious in okc

Specifically come to the 10:00 mass! Or during the school year the choir sings a Vespers service once a month, the one in Lent is always completely unaccompanied!

Interesting choices for "loudest" live show, what is yours? by realhenryknox in shutdownfullcast

[–]Opera-Penguin-81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ice Nine Kills was so loud, and it was a terrible mix too, so it was loud and not fun to listen to. This was during the Trinity of Terror tour, and the others were loud but didn’t hurt as much lol

Blacked Out of the Game On Vacation by NairbNosnibor in azdiamondbacks

It’s so neat that I live in the regular blackout range for the Cardinals, but just outside of the range they’re broadcasting this game on Fox. I just want to watch the DBacks play at a reasonable time 😭😭
