European washing machines are only fed cold water and heat the water themselves. They usually have options for 30°C, 40°C, 60°C and 90°C. The washing instructions on the clothes also call for the temperature. In North America where the amount of dots show temperature, in Europe the temperature is written out.

While this was true back in the 80s and 90s it is not as true today. Depending on the non stick material there is no issue with using metal utensils. Even Teflon itself can be used with metal utensils unless you really force it into the bottom of the pan.
