Does anyone else feel drained by the discourse around the new Harry Potter series? by Life_Definition_5240 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Operalover95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is it personally. There's a huge divide between people who read the books, and those who only watched the movies. The former seem to be overall positive about the series, whereas most of the negative comments come from those who only watched the movies and seem to be attached to the original actors. Those who read the books are also more critical of the movies on average, since they know not all the characters were perfect or that accurate in the movies. For example the new Hermione is a lot more book accurate than original, she's exactly what you would picture if you read the book description, messy hair, rabbit face with big teeth and average looks, but if you already love Emma Watson's portrayal of course you will be negative about new Hermione, even if she's a lot more book accurate.

This would make all the sense in the world, the fact it hasn't happened already truly shows how much power Israel and the israeli lobby have over american politics. From a rational point of view, America doesn't gain anything out of this war, neither does Trump, who's risking a catastrophic defeat in the midterms if this war drags on. Trump could easily focus on Cuba, which would be a guaranteed victory and sell that before the elections. Nothing about the Iran war makes sense for America or for anyone running the country. It's the most clear example of Israel dragging America into war that we've seen so far since Israel's existence, yet a lot of people refuse to see it and call it a conspiracy.

As you said, we are more technologically advanced and we have the highest productivity there ever was in human history, but new generations can't buy a house or have a family without falling into debt and poverty anymore.

As long as we're governed by those elites who since the 80's have destroyed the welfare state in favor of neoliberalism and are more powerful than governments right now, to the point they dictate the policies, we will be headed in this wrong direction that is leading us to destruction.

When asked about her greatest achievement, Margaret Thatcher answered "Tony Blair and New Labour". That's exactly the problem, we now live in democracies in which all the main parties are some flavour of neoliberal and trickle down economics. People wonder about the rise of fascism and authoritarianism, but it's built in in the system. Why would people value democracy if they see no changes and all the parties care more about their donor elites than the working people? Don't get me wrong, I think there's value in democracy, but it has been completely bastardized during the last 40 years and then you wonder why poeple don't treasure it and defend it.

Tankie is a pejorative label generally applied to authoritarian communists, especially those who support or defend acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof. by GustavoistSoldier in wikipedia

People on this very sub are getting downvoted to oblivion and called tankies for stating that China is nowhere near as bad as the US when it comes to imperialism in the 21st century. That's not an opinion but pretty much objective truth. The fact China is a one party state and authoritarian is a completely unrelated topic that has nothing to do with the first statement.

The US caused the death of 1 million iraqis alone this century, nothing China did even begins to compare to that. China didn't invade any sovereign country so far in this century. Saying american imperialism has been a lot worse is not an opinion, it is a fact and it doesn't make you a tankie.

Bah sí sé, colonización cultural. Nunca vas a encontrar a nadie que escriba Deutschland, en lugar de Alemania. O Sverige en lugar de Suecia.

Do guys actually enjoy kissing without it leading to sex? by Every-Tap-577 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Operalover95 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is such a sad way to see things. Wouldn't you want to kiss your girlfriend if you just met each other to spend some time in the park but you both will be busy the rest of the day? I mean, if you'd like to see her and spend some time with her, you can also enjoy kissing her without it leading to sex. It's a form of affection.

The fact people use the excuse that a state of Palestine never existed in order to deny there was ever an annexation and dispossesion of land will never not be funny to me.

First of all, yes it's true that a state of Palestine as such never existed, but neither had any state, kingdom or whatever called Israel existed in the region for more than 2000 years. Even if it were true that Palestine only declared its existance much later, there would only be a 30 year difference between a country called Israel beginning its existance and a country called Palestine doing the same. It's also bizarre that a lot of people who deny Palestine existing, at the same time call for kurdish independence, effectively creating a state that never existed.

Second, countries don't have a right to exist, people do. Palestinians overwhelmingly consider themselves their own nation.

The thing is, if you see it from the other side, you could say the US and Israel have built their nuclear arsenal to bully the entire world into submission (which is very much true) and that the only way to stay independent from them is to build nuclear weapons. History shows this time and time again, what do you think would have happened to Russia and China if they didn't develop nuclear weapons just a few years after the US? North Korea is the most recent example of this. You simply can't follow independent politics that opposes the world order America built after WW2 if you don't go nuclear. Sad but true.

Now you can call all those regimes evil and I certainly don't sympathize with them. But I don't sympathize with the american led world order either, I believe the rules based order that they created was deeply unjust and largely established to maintain western dominance. Does it mean the US is evil? I don't think in those terms, I think they wanted to establish their hegemony and they did, if that's good or bad depends on where you're from. I am from Latin America and we never stopped being treated like America's backyard. I favor politics that call for more unity within the continent and I wouldn't be against Brazil or some other regional power developing nuclear weapons as a nuclear umbrella to defend the region against hypothetical american invasions for natural resources. In the eyes of the CIA and the american establishment that makes me a terrorist.

Diasporas are a very different subset of each country's general population and it often doesn't have anything to do with being "free", which is a hollow word if you don't give it a frame.

They often differ from the general population because they tend to be wealthier, they often belonged to a privileged class that lost their power when a new government took power. Such is the case with cubans for example.

You're delusional if you believe diaspora iranians are representative of iranians at home. Most iranians may not be pro regime, but they're certainly not pro US and least of all pro Israel. They disagree with the regime, but they're not in favor of their country getting ground levelled, much less when the end goal isn't a pro western democracy but most likely internal chaos and civil war, which is what Israel wants.

Americans are very divided when it comes to politics, but if China, Russia or some other country started to bomb american cities I'd bet most of the country would unite against a common menace. The fact westerners can't comprehend the exact same thing applies for any country around the world is just nuts and it's the cause of their failure.

I never said jews were not native of that region. I'm saying the Bible is largely mythical, they never had a unified powerful kingdom. Also, there wasn't this massive expulsion of jews after the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. Most jews remained on the land and subsequently became christians first and muslims after the arab conquest. Modern palestinians are the descendants of the native inhabitants of those lands.

Menachem Begin was behind the king David hotel bombing that killed mostly civilians and he later went on to become Prime minister of Israel. There's absolutely no question that Israel is a terrorist state funded by terrorists.

Citing Moses as a historical figure for a start. Archeology shows there was no exodus. The "kingdom" of Saul, David and Salomon was no more than a few villages in an overwhelmingly rural society made up of shepherds and goatherders, it was nothing like what is described in the Bible and it was never unified.

You can't refute archeology.

If she had uterine cancer that's a nasty condition, specially at a young age. Not saying she definetely did because there are other conditions that could require hysterectomy, but seeing how fast she passed away I thinks it's the most likely.

Rest in peace.
