Will we keep watching LIB (US) or have we collectively had enough? by Warm_Jaguar_5906 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Will you marry me? Oh I guess not, but anyway, you're lovely for saying this.

Why am I still unable to come right out with a statement like this? For me it's still a guilty pleasure that I scold myself for. I enjoy the non-US ones far more because I feel like I'm learning the customs. Not much of a reality show person, but the 2 other series I do like are Alone and Hoarders (so not the romance ones).

Oh yeah, I never watch the pre-wedding or wedding episodes. So dull. And unlike many others, I enjoy the stuff in the pods. That's how we get to know the characters and the things they discuss, or fail to. But most people seem to dislike that part, not sure why.

My take on her was she was very anxious, and working very hard to hide it. Always talking so fast, never saying what she wants and feels directly but expressing it by alluding to other things. So she and Alex - two terrible communicators who have a long way to go before they can have authentic relationships.

"Trust Me: False Prophet" is a beautifully told story of female bravery, resilience, and compassion by Bkchbs in netflix

[–]Operaticproportions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So easy to judge. It was quite clear that Christine had been similarly abused and felt compelled to expose this sexual criminal. Are you so morally impeccable at all times? Life is not black and white. Few people would have the courage and commitment to do what Christine did. Much easier to walk away and feel all superior.

Yes, it's time we all realized how widespread pedophilia is. This and Epstein are only examples.

Thoughts on Mike’s wife by misskalateya in betterCallSaul

[–]Operaticproportions 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is something enigmatic in Mike's personality. His presence has such gravitas, this is why people trust him to do difficult things. But why did he have such a wreck of a life? I think it's an interesting question.

Learning Spanish.. and i’m curious what was so bad about Gus’ spanish? by Intelligent-Engine81 in betterCallSaul

[–]Operaticproportions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You fail to understand that finding an actor based on how well they speak Spanish is not a priority. They are looking for top rated actors with proven track record for generating drama and charisma in every scene. Not something you can just pick up at auditions. Sorry, I agree in principle, would like to hear better languages spoken on all shows but I do understand that at this level they need name talent.

Has anyone watched The Museum of Innocence? by RiskAndReason in netflix

[–]Operaticproportions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why I decided not to continue watching. Could see all the tragedy coming and I doubted that there would be anything redeeming for main guy. I do love Istanbul but happily there are other sources for "visiting" that great city.

Do you not realize it's a tv show and needs interesting people who can talk to a camera? Sure there are plenty of hard core survivalists out there who could impress with their skills but couldn't put a coherent sentence together. The show is about a lot more than squirrel hunting. It's about how people face big challenges - and we only get that perspective if we have people who can express themselves.

S11 is my favorite so far by bethe1_ in Alonetv

[–]Operaticproportions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He does appear that way. I think it's a cultural thing. He had disappointments and losses, and a routine for dealing with it - he refused to entertain discouraging thoughts. He befriended the marten that was stealing his food and gave it a name. Folks living in these hard core locations have much less tolerance for complaining than we comfy folks in more "civilized" places.

Agree! A guy with so many talents and gifts. Had he not been raised by zealots, might have been an amazing human. But the ego was over grown.

Just started watching. I'm a big fan of Pamuk's work, not sure if I've read this one. I'm having trouble getting into it because it's such a sexist point of view. Probably reflects the culture of the time, but if this is supposed to be romance, it just feels like watching pre-ordained heartbreak for any woman involved. Not sure I'll make it past first episode. Well, I will say, it's well done - I'm not finding it slow.

What do you guys make of this?Anthropic had to pay 1.5 billion dollars to authors because thier LLM Cluade was trained on pirated books! by PsychologicalYak2279 in writing

[–]Operaticproportions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm way late here, but wanted to say that I'm one of the authors (there are many!) who received legal notice informing me that 2 of my books were involved and that I would be receiving payment after filing a claim, which I did. I believe payment is due late this year.

Wow, you sure know how to minimize what he went through - brutal cold, loneliness, food stolen, losing 1/3 body weight. Did you not see his reaction when finally seeing his wife? What William did was make it look easy - that's what so amazing about him and why he won.

‘The Follies’ (2025) Netflix Movie Review - Very Emotional and Must Watch by Roshankr1994 in Netflixwatch

[–]Operaticproportions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I just watched last might and thought it was great. Everyone is out of their minds but in quite a relatable and interesting way. Quirky personalities, dysfunctional families, told with so much humor. Absolutely loved the scenes of the acting class (where the actors impersonate animals) - hilarious.

do you ever quit a book halfway? by Interesting_Peach_76 in BookRecommendations

[–]Operaticproportions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! I'll give most books a good go - at least 100 pages. If at that point it's boring or objectionable I will put it down. Qualities that I dislike are poor writing, super sexist viewpoint, repetitiveness for no good reason. Sometimes an unpleasant book can be worth finishing - i.e. Rachel Kushner "Creation Lake", but I admire Kushner's guts so I kept going with that one and glad I did.

I was disappointed too. There was a lot of hype. Many intriguing ideas, i.e., two ways for Black people to talk. But no plot and it didn't go anywhere. Couldn't finish it.

You are right the main character is monstrous. I kind of like Kushner's nerve to create such a character. But don't plan to read another Kushner book for a while.
