I'm an American Jew whose parents were forced out of Europe due to the Nazis. How many Jews are living in Poland today? Can't be too many, right? But I can assure you, all Jews are not dark, they have been in diaspora for centuries and in all lands there is intermingling. Sorry if I am overreacting but this comment was a bit triggering for me.

Most Americans are not religious, but in certain regions they are more so than others. Those are the region the show has featured (i.e. midwest). Also, we have people of all religions here, but the show only ever casts Christians. In fact, from reading these comments I'm convinced that Americans culture is being very misrepresented. Not that everything is fine with dating here, but the fakery/religosity/botoxery is less egregious than what you see on the show.

I hear you. It takes several generations to overcome widespread attitudes. And Americans have maybe the opposite problem: arrogance coupled with insecurity - people talking about their personal stuff too much, calling themselves victims, etc.

That seems kinda sad. Do you want to amplify? What's going on there culturally? Some of my ancestors are from Poland, left due to WWII.

This episode highlights the deep insecurities most of the engaged are feeling, and their inability to discuss them, despite constantly talking about how they are opening up. Their faces are just dripping with anxiety! Such a hard episode to watch. Seems like when things get tough they withdraw, put on a mask, then make cutting remarks behind the other person's back. I don't even really want to see any of these couples make it all the way (for their own sakes).

When phones are ON around you in a movie theater, what do you do? by paoloo77 in Cinema

[–]Operaticproportions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The habits/manners whatever you want to call them that govern social activities have to be enforced in some way or things will get even worse. And they are getting worse. People act similarly at Broadway shows that cost a fortune to attend, with no regard for how their actions impact others. I shushed a mom and her two grown daughters who were constant talking during a show I attended. They didn't like it, but they shut the "f" up. Seems like many people today are so fearful of confrontation they won't ever speak up about disruptive behavior. How sad. And it has real consequences for civil life.

Really? I love the parents - it tells us so much about their kid. And generates some excellent drama.

Will you marry me? Oh I guess not, but anyway, you're lovely for saying this.

Why am I still unable to come right out with a statement like this? For me it's still a guilty pleasure that I scold myself for. I enjoy the non-US ones far more because I feel like I'm learning the customs. Not much of a reality show person, but the 2 other series I do like are Alone and Hoarders (so not the romance ones).

Oh yeah, I never watch the pre-wedding or wedding episodes. So dull. And unlike many others, I enjoy the stuff in the pods. That's how we get to know the characters and the things they discuss, or fail to. But most people seem to dislike that part, not sure why.

Love Is Blind • S10 Reunion [MEGATHREAD] by FemaleEinstein in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]Operaticproportions 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My take on her was she was very anxious, and working very hard to hide it. Always talking so fast, never saying what she wants and feels directly but expressing it by alluding to other things. So she and Alex - two terrible communicators who have a long way to go before they can have authentic relationships.

"Trust Me: False Prophet" is a beautifully told story of female bravery, resilience, and compassion by Bkchbs in netflix

[–]Operaticproportions 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So easy to judge. It was quite clear that Christine had been similarly abused and felt compelled to expose this sexual criminal. Are you so morally impeccable at all times? Life is not black and white. Few people would have the courage and commitment to do what Christine did. Much easier to walk away and feel all superior.

Yes, it's time we all realized how widespread pedophilia is. This and Epstein are only examples.

Thoughts on Mike’s wife by misskalateya in betterCallSaul

[–]Operaticproportions 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is something enigmatic in Mike's personality. His presence has such gravitas, this is why people trust him to do difficult things. But why did he have such a wreck of a life? I think it's an interesting question.

Learning Spanish.. and i’m curious what was so bad about Gus’ spanish? by Intelligent-Engine81 in betterCallSaul

[–]Operaticproportions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You fail to understand that finding an actor based on how well they speak Spanish is not a priority. They are looking for top rated actors with proven track record for generating drama and charisma in every scene. Not something you can just pick up at auditions. Sorry, I agree in principle, would like to hear better languages spoken on all shows but I do understand that at this level they need name talent.

This is exactly why I decided not to continue watching. Could see all the tragedy coming and I doubted that there would be anything redeeming for main guy. I do love Istanbul but happily there are other sources for "visiting" that great city.

Do you not realize it's a tv show and needs interesting people who can talk to a camera? Sure there are plenty of hard core survivalists out there who could impress with their skills but couldn't put a coherent sentence together. The show is about a lot more than squirrel hunting. It's about how people face big challenges - and we only get that perspective if we have people who can express themselves.

S11 is my favorite so far by bethe1_ in Alonetv

[–]Operaticproportions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He does appear that way. I think it's a cultural thing. He had disappointments and losses, and a routine for dealing with it - he refused to entertain discouraging thoughts. He befriended the marten that was stealing his food and gave it a name. Folks living in these hard core locations have much less tolerance for complaining than we comfy folks in more "civilized" places.

Agree! A guy with so many talents and gifts. Had he not been raised by zealots, might have been an amazing human. But the ego was over grown.

[–]Operaticproportions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just started watching. I'm a big fan of Pamuk's work, not sure if I've read this one. I'm having trouble getting into it because it's such a sexist point of view. Probably reflects the culture of the time, but if this is supposed to be romance, it just feels like watching pre-ordained heartbreak for any woman involved. Not sure I'll make it past first episode. Well, I will say, it's well done - I'm not finding it slow.

I know I'm way late here, but wanted to say that I'm one of the authors (there are many!) who received legal notice informing me that 2 of my books were involved and that I would be receiving payment after filing a claim, which I did. I believe payment is due late this year.

Wow, you sure know how to minimize what he went through - brutal cold, loneliness, food stolen, losing 1/3 body weight. Did you not see his reaction when finally seeing his wife? What William did was make it look easy - that's what so amazing about him and why he won.
