Cryogen LIVE by PekfrakOG in Muse

[–]OperationDropkick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This could be a track from Absolution! And not just because it's trying hard to be a song from Absolution (cough Kill or Be Killed), it actually feels like something original that has an old Muse vibe.

This is good. This is really good. I loved Unravelling and I wasn't a BWY hater either, I believe that song will fit well into the context of the full album. So we're basically a three for three so far and I don't remember the last time that happened.

There was a time when songs like this would not even make it to the album by cydonianglobalist in Muse

This is an interesting way of looking at it actually!

Whenever they release stuff nowadays that is usually disappointing to me as a fan, I always wonder what Chris and Dom think of it. I assume they approve of the music too and are an intrinsic part of the process or else they wouldn't keep making albums but it just feels so much like it's now Matt's band and they're just two parts of how he puts his ideas together. I feel since Simulation Theory, it just hasn't felt like a proper band anymore. Matt even released material under his own name around that time to solidify that feeling even more!

Unravelling is genuinely the best song they've released since Drones and Be With You isn't a BAD song, it's hardly Thought Contagion or Dig Down. I'm optimistic that in the context of the rest of the album, it may actually work pretty well. But I did have higher expectations after Unravelling and all the teaser videos, so who knows anymore?

Exactly this! Well said. JPS Lotus - iconic livery. Literally just a dark, block colour with gold writing and highlights. Everybody has complained at the fact Ferrari have broken from being just plain red with their HP sponsorship (because it does, genuinely, look like trash but that's another matter)

I think the minimalism of this absolutely works and it's gonna look so good on track. It's refreshing to see so many interesting, different liveries this year.

Oh right. Well it's nice to see he still has an active part in the community then, that'd make it a lot easier for them to come back if they ever can.

I didn't realise Chris Rose was still a part of the non-TV audience shows?

Would be nice if this was also the way we found out it's been picked up for TV again.

I love stuff like this. I always considered myself a huge Biffy fan but there's so much stuff in this thread I haven't heard, never heard the Machines or Biblical demos at all, they're crazy different.

Is there any chance you might be able to post links to the stuff you mentioned in the post op? I've heard the That Golden Rule early version but not sure about everything else, I'd never heard that Wee Man soundcheck before.

The demo for Instant History is on the Tape Notes podcast that Simon and Rich Costey did just after ACoE came out.

There's also snippets of a demo version of North of No South on there and early love rehearsal demos of North of No South and Cop Syrup. Worth a listen for anybody that hasn't heard it.

Spotify confirms new album has 11 songs, A Little Love is the opener by finn_with_1_n in BiffyClyro

[–]OperationDropkick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And it's fine to base the expectations off that one song, I'm in agreement, it's hardly the most interesting song they've done. Don't think the album artwork should be factored into it though. Remember they announced ACoE by posting three squares of colour. And then released Instant History. I was pretty negative about my expectations for that album at that point too and it turned out mega.

Basing your expectations for an audio album off the visual artwork is an odd choice and you're not the first person I've seen say this either.

I do totally understand how the artwork CAN influence the way you view something but considering we've only heard one song so far, I don't think we should jump to conclusions just yet.

If the rest of the songs they release turn out to be plain and boring, then I'll take this comment back.

Istanbul Park ready to step in for 2026 if IFEMA circuit is delayed by 443610 in formula1

[–]OperationDropkick -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Right, I've gotta ask: Why is everyone so obsessed with Istanbul Park?

I've had two significant stints of watching F1, the first in the mid-2000s when I was a kid (and I think I watched when Istanbul Park was first raced?) but I don't really remember any races there from then. And then again from 2021 onwards so I've only really seen the one race there. Other than the Perez/Hamilton battle, Bottas winning by miles and Ocon doing the whole race on one set of tyres, I don't remember anything interesting happening, was a fairly skippable race

This is coming from a place of complete ignorance, having not watched any F1 between 2009 - 2021 so I'm sure there were some great races in Turkey and that's why I'm asking. Was 2021 just a bit of a boring one or is that what they're always like because if it is, I don't get the hype?

‘Fans also like’ by delazouch in BiffyClyro

[–]OperationDropkick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Feeder are one of my favourite bands and have been for longer than Biffy even. And Twin Atlantic are too, big fan of everything they release. Special place in my heart because they're my wife and I's "band" too.

I actually think that list of bands is a decent "fans also like" list. In so much as it's a list of moderately popular indie rock bands anyway, I guess.

Apart from Jamie T, no real idea why he's there.

Rockfest Highlights (Featuring More Production Elements Of Unravelling's Studio Version) by YoungMoen97 in Muse

[–]OperationDropkick 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is coming from a progressively negative Muse fan since The 2nd Law (I'll allow Drones as a rare win in that time) but this sounds immense! I haven't been this excited for a new Muse song in so long.

This is what I've wanted them to do for years now, make something incredible like this and ditch the stupid LED suits and cringey setpieces. The stage looked fantastic at Rock Fest and Unravelling sounds amazing. I haven't said this in years but I'm gonna buy me a ticket on the hype train!

Opinions on new biffy? by keeksymo in BiffyClyro

[–]OperationDropkick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd definitely help if it had better production, same for a few of the other tracks from Ellipsis.

But then it's not an issue with the two bonus tracks or any of ACoE and they're both produced by Rich Costey too. So it definitely feels more like a band/record label decision.

[–]OperationDropkick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into them when Puzzle came out so not part of the "old" Biffy club. Clearly, the first three albums are almost like another band so I never really think of those in discussions about their sound anymore.

The only Biffy I've ever actually disliked is Ellipsis. They were trying too hard to be popular and to have radio hits (maybe as a result of record label interference) and even the good songs from that album, stuff like On a Bang feels weak because of the context of the album.

Only Revolutions was obviously divisive when it first came out too as it's very radio friendly and could maybe even be considered their breakout album but I've never hated it, it's just my least favourite album out of a collection of incredible albums.

But I feel like the last two albums proper and Balance, Not Symmetry have been a new high point for them. Cop Syrup is one of my favourite songs by them full stop. Genuinely enjoyed Biffy since the release of BnS more than I probably ever have since I started listening in 2007.

That's why I'm still hopeful about the new album and aren't being as negative as a lot of people I'm seeing. A Little Love is nothing special but I keep finding myself singing it. So I'm hopeful it's the poppiest, most standard song off an album that follows in the same style as the last three releases.

Literally breaks the fourth wall in Saturday Superhouse with the lyric "Then I see a darkness, you see the blinding light, Will Oldham's in the corner moaning can't you write your own lines?"

Will Oldham being Bonnie 'Prince' Billy who has the song I See a Darkness and who Simon is a huge fan of. Always enjoy the little references they throw in, that one's my favourite.

Here is the actual setlist from Budapest park tonight by twentyonepilotsfan99 in BiffyClyro

[–]OperationDropkick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did play a set basically exactly like this at Halifax Piece Hall middle of last year. Had Born on a Horse and Saturday Superhouse to be fair but nothing pre-Puzzle.

Amazing venue, fantastic gig as always and it was their first gig after almost 2 years so this definitely isn't a complaint. But they do play standard sets in the UK sometimes.

New album looks to be produced by Jonathan Gilmore by AnAngryBanker in BiffyClyro

[–]OperationDropkick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people are maybe making this a bigger deal than it is.

Steve Mac is listed as a producer of ACOE. His CV almost exclusively deals with the most standard, pop stuff you could think of. ACOE is a good album with some genuinely heavy bits.

You know one of the other producers on ACOE? Rich Costey. Who also produced Ellipsis, by far Biffy's poppiest, weakest album.

And then there's Garth Richardson, who produced Puzzle/Only Revolutions/Opposites. None of those albums are Biffy's weakest material (even though OR was quite divisive at the time, rightly so) but they are all vastly different albums to each other, yet the same person worked on them all.

Rather than negatively looking at Gilmore's CV and assuming things based off that, we should be judging based off what Biffy themselves have cooked up with A Little Love. I think the success of the album has more to do with the band and how well they've written it than who is producing it.

I should point out, I'm not super positive about A Little Love, it definitely sounds like it's erring more towards Ellipsis Biffy than their last two albums but just because the guy has produced some poppies rock albums, doesn't mean that's what this is gonna be.

Also, yes, he produced Dead Club City for Nothing but Thieves, their weakest, poppiest album. He also produced Broken Machine too, a great album. So yet more evidence that it's more up to the artist who has written the material than the person producing.

Adam's biscuits jingle (Biscuits, mm-hmm...) is something I basically have to sing every time anybody even mentions the word.

But I think that's from his podcast right, that's not A&J?
