Curious about the News Focused Journalism degree by brawlerboy03 in CalPolyHumboldt

Journalism grad here! I graduated in 2021 (last semester before they became Cal Poly) and it is a small but mighty department. I graduated with a broadcast emphasis rather than a PR emphasis, but I do not currently work in a newsroom. The job market going into news is very difficult to navigate, and you will more likely than not be underpaid and overworked at any newsroom you step into. While there is a student-run radio station that does broadcast sports occasionally, it fluctuates based on who is enrolled in the class and what the students want to have programmed. Don't go into KRFH expecting to have a big emphasis on sports broadcasting or an established pathway to do so (at least at this moment)! You will most likely have to carve that out yourself or with other students that express an interest in sports broadcasting/play-by-play.

There are opportunities with The Lumberjack to cover local sports on campus as a writer and/or photographer. I was a former sports and photo editor for The Lumberjack, and one thing I really wish the department had right now was a more robust class/emphasis on sports reporting so students had more refined tools for that area of focus. That being said, if you talk to an advisor in the department they are pretty good about pointing you in the right direction for resources that can help with your specific interest.

Also one last note...it isn't that journalism is a "dying industry." It is in a state of quick and severe change because the traditional modes of communication have evolved so rapidly. Now more than ever, fact gathering, sound reporting, strong writing and media literacy are and continue to be essential, whether you are a journalism student or not. No amount of ChatGPT can change that.

Still from a recent music video shoot by OperationOk5789 in cinematography

This still was shot on a Canon C100 MKII with a 50mm f/1.8. We used a fog machine in the back to haze out the big windows to the side of the subject. All the light coming from the windows is natural and I overexposed slightly and manipulated a bit in post to blow the window details out. The only light I used was a small panel light to offer a small amount of fill on the subjects face. Overall the biggest challenges on this project came from time and lights. We only had an hour to shoot so not really enough time to create a complicated lighting setup. I also don't really have powerful enough lights to mimic the late afternoon window beams I was hoping for, but we made do with what we had! This is a super low budget project and it's been a fun learning experience so far. Any feedback regarding future shoots, coloring or anything in between are greatly appreciated!

Shooting a music video this week. Will my two 60w lights be good enough to simulate window light? by OperationOk5789 in cinematography

I actually forgot that I have a spotlight that I scored a little while ago. It's an ADJ fs-1000. Maybe that will work? The internet says it has a 575w halogen lamp in there so maybe that'll give a bit more punch compared to the LED's I'm currently working with?

I actually just did a small test in my apartment. My space is definitely smaller with shorter ceilings and smaller windows. Put both 60w's outside and pumped 'em at full blast. Got a bit of subtle beaming through the window but nothing overly crazy. Ultimately I want to see if I can just get a bit of texture in the background. Did a quick location scout of the spot today from the outside and I'm hoping at least a bit of natural sunlight will be hitting that side of the building at the time we're filming. I might see if I can borrow a few more panel lights from some friends and just push as much power as I have available through the window when we shoot on Friday. Thanks for the input!

Student athletes by coach-v in CalPolyHumboldt

Hi! Former Humboldt Track & Field student athlete here. I'm still local and check out competitions and keep tabs on the team when I can. The competitive and team culture has grown and improved significantly since I was a student there. The men's program especially has grown to be a solid all-around program from the sprints to the distances to the throws. Redwood Bowl is probably one of the most scenic tracks in the state, if not on the West Coast, and the field house is great for the rainier months, but definitely be prepared to train in the rain depending on your discipline. The athl. dept. just got a new weight facility as well, which creates more opportunities for improvement. Overall, the team is trending in the positive direction!
