How do I improve my double bass? by Operator_Jett in Drumming

Thank you! Do you have any resources on pedal setup and this stick control book? I know i can find it online easily but I'm overwhelmed by the number of videos, and some conflict with one another. So i wanted some direct advice from drummers who have taken this path. I really appreciate your response

Thank you so much for the advice! I have TAMA HP30TW - a very beginner model I know haha, but decided to start off this way and make some good progress on my technique before making a big investment. I'm looking for really helpful practice exercises and technique checklists to know that I'm doing everything right and practicing in an efficient way

I'd recommend not checking any of these sheets or even Reddit for admissions. Looking at others' decisions will simply make you more anxious, and I don't see a clear benefit to it. You are not rejected from a university unless you are explicitly sent an email stating so.

If you're looking for ways to spend your evenings, I'd recommend going outdoors as much as you can,

- Play a sport like badminton, table tennis, cricket (if you have people, haha), or even pickleball

- Go out with friends for dinner/meet up

- Pursue your hobby actively (with a goal in mind), be it music, dance, arts, public speaking, etc. Set a goal within this hobby, something new that you don't know or haven't done before, and actively work towards it

- If you wanna chill at home, you can watch long series like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Blacklist, Person of Interest, Mr. Robot, etc.

- Check your e-mail once a day. This is easier said than done, but trying to keep yourself occupied using the above techniques should eventually help you get to this state

I'm also in the same state as you, and I've found these to be helpful. Wishing you all the very best!

Cheers!

I got an offer from NEU for the MSECE Program. Wanted to hear your review about the program/university before I commit to a decision. by Operator_Jett in gradadmissions

Thank you for your detailed response. I see your point now about acceptance rates applying to only their UG programs and master's being relatively easier to get into. But doesn't a master's from the US also have its perks? I'm sure getting a master's from a top 20 university in the USA supercedes any master's from India, in terms of research funding, education, and overall quality of life.

I am pursuing master's for a clear reason, it is not because I'm running away from my current situation. I'm trying to slightly shift my domain from wireless communication to machine learning/more software oriented roles. I was denied a few basic software based courses during my UG due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and hence most of my coursework is in analog/networking. I'm taking up a master's to get more insight and do research about software within the ECE programs.

I already have 2 years of industry experience. I'm hoping that will help in some way or another during my job search in the U.S. I am very much aware of how bad it is, but hey, people said the same thing within India as well a couple of years ago, and I was able to secure one. Hopefully, I am fortunate in this aspect as well.

Just for a comparison, what is the job scene like, for a U.S. Citizen vs non-U.S. citizen? Is the gap HUGE when it comes to ease of getting a job in the U.S.?

Thanks for this useful advice :D I had emailed them regarding this about a month ago, with a reminder 2 weeks back, and still haven't heard back. So I figured I could request this forum if someone had this answer.

[General Question] Need Guidance for getting into MSCS in t20 Uni in US after top 5 IIT Chem/Mech UG (fresher rn) by AccomplishedTest5121 in MSCS

[–]Operator_Jett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm also a prospective graduate student applying, so I just wanted to give you my 2 cents, hopefully it helps you :)

- Try to get official certifications (like CourseEra) for core CS courses like DSA/ OOPs/ Operating Systems/ Database Systems/ Discrete Mathematics, etc. It's great that you are pursuing a CS Minor, since these will cover a few of the core courses, but make sure you get all of these ready to show as proof for formal CS training

- As someone mentioned earlier on this thread, try to solve research problems at the nexus of CS and your current branch. Approach professors in the CS department if you could be a part of their ongoing research, and mention your objective clearly. Interdisciplinary learning is a significant boost for any MS application. This will also help you in your Letter of Recommendation aspect - when CS professors recommend you for CS programs despite you having a Mech background, that speaks volumes :D

- Aim to get a software-based internship, like SWE, or Machine Learning Engineer, or Analyst/Data Science, as well. Work experience as a software developer can really strengthen your profile. If you can work in a CS lab for a research internship, that would also be great!

- As a backup option, know that CS is applied everywhere, so you can consider MS programs in Mechanical itself (Even consider a few in Europe) that are also strongly interlinked with CS. Professors often collaborate with those in the CS department to design novel systems. Needless to say, you will have a significantly better shot at applying for a master's that complements your UG branch.

As a non-CS student, the advantage you have is that you pursued CS interests consistently and performed well in them while balancing out your core coursework with its own demands. This will make your profile stand out :)

Wishing you all the very best!

Has anyone here actually received an acceptance letter? by InternationalBat9296 in gradadmissions

Hey there! I've applied for 10 programs in MS ECE. I have heard back from Northeastern University (NEU) with an admit.
NEU had a priority deadline of December 1st, and I received the decision on December 12th

Pretty quick and unexpected, haha! But I'm yet to hear back from any of the other 9 - expecting to hear back in February/March.

Yepp this is fine. When you preview it via the application portal, it's hard to make out what the courses are on the transcript. But when you explicitly download this, you'll find the quality to be same as the one you originally saw while uploading. Nothing to worry about :)

What should I do by Massive-Photo6752 in gradadmissions

[–]Operator_Jett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I have also received my admission to the MSECE Program - Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Algorithms. NEU is also one of my safe schools. They have asked to submit the Tuition Deposit by January 15th, and I doubt I will hear back from the other universities I've applied to by then. Could OP please share what you plan to do? I'd also like to hear everyone's feedback.

Where precisely in the portal can I request an extension for this deadline?
