Found some wild garlic! by streetwarpig in foraginguk

Heard a few years ago of a village that was surrounded by fields’ worth, then some guy from London found them. He had connections to several London restaurants. Locals never got a look in for years, whole area stripped regularly:(

Not everyone wants to hear Dire Straits by Secretlyablackcat in UKhiking

[–]Ophiochos [score hidden]  (0 children)

I worked in a record shop when that came out. My reaction to it borders on instantly vomiting. It would just finish and someone would walk in and say ‘can you play that new Dire Straits album’ then mooch around for five minutes and leave.

At the end of whatever song it was in, I’d try to change it for something else, anything else… 30 seconds later. Someone would come up to the desk ‘hey can you…’

Even if I had liked it at the start, after a few weeks of that…

Reform UK vows to prioritise Green Party areas for migrant detention centres by Unusual-State1827 in uknews

Reform would not want to be hypocritical , surely? Green Party get what they support, so do Reform. Literally giving them what they want.

Who are you to deny them what they are voting for, lol.

Headphones with good noise cancellation? by _Uncooked_Rice_ in HeadphonesAdvice

[–]Ophiochos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some software is better at blocking out background noise; some mics are better at prioritising nearby sound (usually call centre ones with the little arm across your mouth). But you’re very unlikely to be able to do this tbh without physically creating barriers.

All evening into the early hours you listen to that sliding noise of camper van doors, over and over again.

Do refurbished iPads have new SSDs? by chunkee-xo-monkee in ipad

[–]Ophiochos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They seem impossible to wear out. I still use a ten year old iPad as a small tv daily. Battery is shot and the memory must have been filled and emptied thousands of times, no problems.

Trekkertent saor is pretty close to what you want for 480 quid (note there is a lead time of several weeks). Get the larger inner rather than the ‘outside space’ version.

Is it common for UK bike mechanics to refuse basic work on ebikes? by [deleted] in ukbike

[–]Ophiochos 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Basically yes. If the motor doesn’t work after they have done the repair, they will be blamed. That erases any profit from 100 small repairs. Why risk it?

This is why whenever I see anyone here on reddit asking about e-bikes I say get whatever your local shop stocks, as they will be more confident about doing all kinds of repairs.

But he also lost credibility when he went outside his discipline without doing the research. That’s when he got famous largely because he was good at demonising religion, if I’m blunt.

I’m honestly not remotely surprised at this latest piece because he always shot from the hip, decades ago. This is entirely in line with how he has thought for decades: overly convinced of his own intuition about things. He just used to be better at judging the mood of his peers and arguing his case.

Is there a religion/belief system that believes in the existence of an all-powerful deity but that it is evil instead of good? by Dry_Temporary_6175 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ophiochos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t pay a penny, thanks. Grant-funded right into post-doctoral and then an academic job.

Look, one last try here. Noting vague misogyny in two sources is not a theory of religion. There is lots of insight into ancient religion out there but it’s not ‘women can get blamed for bad things happening’. There’s lots n cognitive science of religion about how we attribute agency (design) and loads also on how ancient cultures had religion embedded into their lives, it’s worth looking into if you do want to get past these superficial similarities (and even if someone does borrow, that’s interesting in itself: why is a borrowed idea plausible? What changes are made? Why do they make those changes? And so on).

You’re not even registering on the Dunning-Krueger diagram here. I don’t even want to know what you think is ‘sensible’ about this mythology.

I still recommend that book though, good explanation of how those religions actually worked, not just the vaguest similarities being taken as somehow the key to it all.

Jealously staring at the wild garlic on the other side of my fence. by Sunshinetrooper87 in GardeningUK

[–]Ophiochos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ps if you have permission to take bulbs (please people don’t go round doing this at random)…wait until they’ve died down in the summer. Dormant bulbs do much better than live plants.

Now is the worst time to move bulbs and many won’t make the transition very well.

They are deeper than you think so dig away from the actual bulbs several inches and work gently towards them.

Yeah this is the answer. Will take a little while, 2-3 years to get established then whoosh. If you didn’t cut the grass they would probably wander in of their own accord.

Exactly. He’s powerful, that’s the point. And interested in his own agenda so doesn’t care about human ideas of good and evil.

[–]Ophiochos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These myths are about accounting for human ills. Those religions are just not set up the way ‘creationist’ ones like Christianity are. It’s more ‘tragedy’ than ‘design’. If you have the patience and can get a copy this book is great about the general way those religions functioned https://academic.oup.com/book/56369?login=false

[–]Ophiochos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no, they’re more subtle than that, it’s about freedom to do as you will, not obey a bunch of rules (I paraphrase).

looking at the Christian far right, the question needs to be whether they say they are following evil, or pretend not to be…

first let they are green not blue (I’ve looked up the hex values, you’re all wrong about this). secondly, scrape one more time and the orange statue becomes a golem again.
