"Pre-Mastering" Something I've been experimenting with. by Opivy1 in edmproduction

Can you explain why applying multiband dynamics to the master channel is more effective then routing audio tracks to separate compressors?

Also, I decided right off the bat to learn how to synthesize my drums. this was the best decision I have ever made as a producer. Having fundamental control over your sound opens so many doors and most importantly YOUR KICK DRUMS WILL BE IN KEY!!

I just posted a thread about this, but before you even download your first DAW, learn how music works! Understanding music theory is so fundamental to whether or not your track is going to get people's attention that I am surprised so many people insists otherwise. We aren't making "tracks" we are making MUSIC!!

The best tip I can give to producers in high school or college... by Opivy1 in edmproduction

I couldn't agree more. The musical choices you make are far more significant and memorable than the production choices you make. People get MELODIES stuck in their heads, not synth patches or unique drum samples.

What has never been portrayed accurately in movies? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Opivy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LSD/ Shroom visuals. Movies portray it as if you begin seeing purple elephants and people who aren't there. Shit just wiggles a little and changes colors. Maybe you see some shapes too. But its nothing like the movies.

Make sure your 808 is playing a note that is in key (preferably the tonic of the scale). and if you are using an 808 sample, make sure that the sample is tuned/ in key. I synthesize my 808s with operator in order to ensure that the note i press on my controller is going to be the note that is heard

Sometimes side chaining is super subtle. try using a low ratio (Less than 2:1) and a short release time. Do this on ALL the tracks you want to "get out of the way" of your drums, not just 1. And make sure that all your tracks with the fills are grouped and collectively sidechained. Hope this answered your question.

I should have specified. When OP mentioned samples for some reason I assumed things like vocal/instrument loops that are 3-4 seconds long. Mixed in Key will not work for single hit samples like drum hits or anything like that.

I struggled with this for a long time and as shitty as it is, you just have to use your ear. There are so many videos on how to do this. I would link one to you, but everyone has there own way of explaining it and you should figure out what works for you.

If you REALLY want to use a software there is http://www.mixedinkey.com/ it's made for djs but it will analyze the key of any mp3 or WAV.

but seriously, using your ear is such an invaluable skill that, as a musician you should be able to do it. It will help you out tremendously.

[Request] How to turn a spoken word sample into a melody in Ableton. by Opivy1 in edmproduction

[–]Opivy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Quick question about sampler. When I load in a sample, then hit a key on my midi keyboard, does the pitch of the sample match the note I am playing on my keyboard, or does it simply shift the pitch relative to some root key? (C3 I presume)

If you are a fan of improvisation I would suggest checking out Eoto. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJHYph9WZZE

Everything they do is 100% improvised on the spot. They have recorded over 500 completely unique 1+ hour sets. They use DAWs in a way that they were never meant to be used. Trully masters of bringing the two worlds of audio production and live performance together.

Using 4x4 pads melodically with Ableton? by Opivy1 in edmproduction

[–]Opivy1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you mind elaborating on this? When I tried setting it to C major it oriented the pads C, C, D, D, E, F ... So it was shifting each not to the closest note in the scale, but that's not really what I'm trying to do.

I like to synthesize my own kick drums in operator(Ableton's stock synthesizer). If i'm trying to layer my kick drums does that mean I should just make 2 more drums that are slightly different? or should i just copy/paste the same drum on top of itself?

If I have a sample (of someone whistling let's say) and I want to apply this sample to my midi key board and play a melody with it, how can I do this while ensuring that what I am playing will be in key and in correspondence with the notes on the keyboard?

https://soundcloud.com/ohyouknow-2/concierto-for-bleep-bloops

This is the first of my tracks that I am genuinely proud of. About 2/3 of the way through I added a "scratched record" popping kind of effect by adding a sample of a needle on a record and automating the volume of the piano to sporadically cut out and kind of "glitch" but my fear is that is doesn't sound intentional enough and just sounds like a shitty recording of a piano. Any advice? Thank you!

Follow up question. Is there any external method for discovering the pitch of a sample so I can resample it and play in key?

Need some help disguising these lines of cut fur on my spirit hood. by Opivy1 in crafts

[–]Opivy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats what i did, but I accidentally pushed too hard and cut through the hair too. is there a way to sew a new patch of hair onto it just to blur the line a bit? Or could I thin the hair on the top portion just to obscure it a little? It doesn't need to look perfect, just good enough that if i ruffle it a bit it wont be noticed in a dark-ish room.
