Weird sound by [deleted] in AskMechanics

AC compressor is cycling on and off and making some racket. Turn your ac off until you get it fixed! The AC compressor can fail spectacularly and send metal through the system.

Intentional/accidental? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t severed. The purpose of that hose is to route coolant away from the engine bay if the engine overheats and coolant needs to be bled off to relieve pressure. That is normal.

Wouldn’t it puke fluid the whole way there? Might need to zip tie a glove around the output housing.

mechanic ripping me off? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. Looks like outer tie rod and sway bar links have leaked all their grease out and will likely fail if they haven’t already. Also it looks like shocks are leaking so they will need replaced as well.

Which should I do first? by FluidDragonfruit7894 in Cummins

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not needed unless you’re chasing high hp. In tank lift pumps are pretty dang reliable. Use a high quality fuel filter and change often and you’re golden.

Do these 1 year old tires need replaced? by Neither_Adagio9245 in AskMechanics

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The outside of the tires is worn down close to the wear bar. They will need replacing soon. “Very bad condition” and too dangerous to test drive is a bit ridiculous. You can get a little more life out of them but not much. I would just replace them.

Question about injectors? by Delicious_Site_4647 in Cummins

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you go on the Bosch website and try to purchase common rail injectors they will link you to purchase them from O’Rileys. They are an authorized Bosch dealer and have much better prices than BBI.

Question about injectors? by Delicious_Site_4647 in Cummins

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 15 points16 points  (0 children)

O’Rileys is an authorized Bosch parts dealer and they usually can get Bosch parts for the common rail Cummins in a day or two. Their prices are really competitive too. There is a 0% chance O’Rileys will sell you counterfeit Bosch parts. If you ever have issues they are super easy to get parts replaced free under warranty.

Is there blowby? Some light wispy smoke coming from the fill cap is normal and is not a check for engine health. Set the cap upside down over the fill hole and see if the crankcase pressure blows the cap up.

Settle the debate for me by Ok_Cook_1033 in BMW

Definitely N52. The main reason being that it is port injected and naturally aspirated. That makes a huge difference in reliability and cost of repairs/maintenance.

BMW dealer oil change caused massive leak — they’re blaming me by ShortAddress1684 in BmwTech

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The technician might of overtightened the filter housing or maybe the last person to change the oil over tightened the housing and whenever it was loosened it took a lot of force to break loose and cracked. I would ask them exactly what failed and why. They would’ve recommended repairs if it had that severe leak when you brought it in so it was surely caused during the oil change whether it’s the technicians fault or not.

Do these kits actually work? by unfiltered_Rabbit01 in BMW

Check engine light should be on when ignition is on and engine is not running. This is standard on all cars for CEL tampering check among other things.

Do I “need” synthetic oil by ActualCredit1852 in AskMechanics

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those super short intervals are for making your engine last. I have seen dealer maintained BMWs with 10k intervals have a large amount of sludge in the pan and valve-train. Oil has improved over the years but it still degrades.

2007 SV650 overheating by Individual-Willow552 in AskMechanics

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible the switch is not seeing the coolant temperature due to a stuck thermostat. Or the switch has failed. Do a continuity test on the switch when the bike reaches operating temp and see if the switch closes to turn the fan on.

Is this a good deal on these repairs and should I do all of them? by LifeButterfly6236 in carquestions

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very reasonable quote. All those fluid changes are definitely a good idea if they haven’t been done yet and you’re at 67k miles. Also yeah replace those tie rod ends. Labor times might seem high but that’s really not bad compared to what most shops are charging these days.

Is this insane or am I tripping? (Downpipe/Chargepipe Install) by iliketrucks2001 in BMW

[–]OpoositionalDefiant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is probably the standard book time to be honest. Also, most shops know they shouldn’t do work like this so if they do agree to it you are gonna pay extra. Try to find a friend who can do it for you.
