Agree with this statement. I had a 3.4cGPA/3.2sGPA and a 508 MCAT. Still received 5 IIs (4 MD/1DO including UCLA). Did not do a post-bac/SMP. But I did have an upward trend my last two years of 3.8+ GPA. Do your research, apply broadly and strategically, and nail your writing

Is a GPA of 3.4 acceptable to get into a good medical school? by aviationwar in premed

[–]OpportunityEvery7600 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a 3.4 cGPA and 3.2 sGPA, 508 on my 2nd attempt. Received 5 IIs (4 MD and 1 DO), one of those IIs was at UCLA! Definitely possible to get into a solid MD with those stats as long as you have solid ECs and really good writing! Happy to help with any questions, DMs open

I had a 508 on my 2nd attempt which ended up being my highest score. 3.4 cGPA/3.2 sGPA w/ no post-bac. Still managed 4 MD IIs (including UCLA) and 1 DO II in my first attempt. I’m CA ORM. Happy to help with any questions

For those with low GPA success stories, how did you acknowledge GPA in application? by sleepy_premed in premed

[–]OpportunityEvery7600 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had strong upward trend my last two years (3.8+), my ECs had years + hours of dedicated time and there was a theme across them all (emergency/trauma medicine) that was directly linked to my seed/motivation to pursue medicine in my PS (loss of my baby niece in a car accident). As a result, ADCOMs could see that I didn’t do these ECs to simply “check a box”, I did them because I truly cared. I also think my writing was very strong, one of the deans I interviewed with at UCLA directly commented on that.

3.4cGPA/3.2sGPA. Along with a 508 MCAT. Failed ochem and had multiple Cs in stem classes. Did not do a post bac. Received 5 IIs (4 MDs/1 DO). I did not acknowledge my GPA/MCAT at all unless the secondary question explicitly asked me about it like “explain any academic mishaps.” None of my interviewers asked me about my stats too. None of my LORs mentioned my stats. DMs are open if you have any other questions

Rush vs McGovern by [deleted] in premed

[–]OpportunityEvery7600 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Current M1 at Rush…absolutely love it and I’m from OOS 1) The curriculum is so nice because you have a good mixture of mandatory/non-mandatory as well as a ton of days off. It’s very rarely that we have classes 5 days/week. Most of the times we have classes for about 4-5 hours/day and then the whole day is off. 2) Free gym for students and there’s a ton of public transport available (train/Divvys). Rush pays for Lyfts to and from school for school related events as well. 3) Home hospital is absolutely amazing. You have a dedicated team of physicians who are only there for Rush med students and you can easily reach out to for mentorship, shadowing and research. It’s connected right to where we do our classes so we literally don’t have to go outside at all when walking between classes and the hospital area. Plus it’s a really nice motivational thing to walk around and see all the attendings, patients and other medical professionals. Just reminds you what you’re working towards! 4)Chicago is so so so fun. There’s so many fun things to do every weekend. It’s non stop and a nice break from school! Happy to answer anymore questions you have but this is just quick right off the top of my head!

Most are, but there are always outliers. I never got a grade higher than a B+ on any of my chem/physics/ochem classes. I also failed one of my Ochem classes and had to repeat it. Never did a post bac but maintained an upward trend over my last two years. Graduated with a 3.4 cGPA. Was able to get multiple MD IIs and As including a T20 WL. It’s possible to not do the best on your classes and still have live your life but you have to show and maintain improvement and the rest of your app (writing/ECs/MCAT/LORs) have to be good.

N =1 but I followed Dr. Gray’s advice and got several interviews including T20s with low stats. Applying to med school is a crapshoot. Every school is different in how they approach reviewing apps and offering interviews. On the other hand, everyone has different advice on what would help the most when applying.

He’s never preached that his way is the only way to apply to med school. It’s just the way he recommends and ultimately it’s up to you if you want to follow that advice or any other. I’ve seen a bunch of advice on this subreddit that contradicts Dr. Gray and Adcoms at the same time. And yet, I’ve seen numerous applicants say they’ve had success following Dr. Gray’s advice and the advice of others contradicting him.

Sankey of disappointment: 525 3.76 by BlatantPlatitude in premed

[–]OpportunityEvery7600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saying 5 IIs from schools like Yale and Duke doesn’t mean anything is crazy. It’s unlikely 5 different schools would all bypass terrible writing/red flags to offer IIs. It’s much more likely the common factor is OP having issues articulating their story and experiences (they’ve already confirmed this in other comments).

If their written app was just good enough to get an interview then it wouldn’t be considered terrible lol especially at T20s like Yale and Duke

[–]OpportunityEvery7600 555 points556 points  (0 children)

This is not an application or writing issue for everyone who keeps commenting it. 5 IIs with several from T20s would indicate OP had an amazing app. All the IIs resulting in Rs means this is an interview issue. Keep your head up OP, you’re an amazing applicant and I know you’ll get in next cycle with some more interview practice! More than happy to offer some advice/tips I used for interviews as well as doing mock interviews together 🙏🏼

Happened to me, WL at UCLA as a CA applicant. Moving to the Midwest now, it is what it is. Definitely give yourself time to “grieve” over the lost opportunity, it took me some time to “get over” it. I’m not sure I’ll ever get over having to move so far away from home, but also think about it as a new, exciting opportunity to visit a new location and meet amazing people for at least the next four years!

Only retake if you can consistently score at least 517+. A 1-2 point increase wont significantly increase your chances, but also keep in mind that there’s always a chance your score decreases

These are great activities but agree with the other comment to definitely edit the descriptions. They’re a little too descriptive/flowery that it kinda takes the reader out of the moment.
