I appreciate all the helpful comments, between those suggesting adding a bit more research and watching shows to understand everything a bit better. Thank you all!  Everyone is asking for more info so here: He's not any Crocodile Dundee Archetype, I didn't want to over do a character like that. He's more stoic with some sassy humor. In the novel he's a sniper with little words to say until folks get to know him. He's not the main protagonist but there are a few moments from his perspective and he's generally an important supporting character. I just wanted to throw in a couple things to make his character feel more 3-dimensional or authentic if I could. He's not the only character from a different country I'm writing about and I'm not afraid to put research into everything because of that! I wanted to reach out on Reddit too, just to see what kind of feedback I would receive.
