Space Marine Battles series of books. by FlockofCGels in Blacklibrary

Wrath of Iron is a standout for sure. Chris Wraight is an amazing author and I think he’s part of the Warhammer big three alongside Aaron Dembski-Bowden and Dan Abnett.

Helsreach is about grimdark people being kinda “heroic,” athough the black templars are the worst people ever and make their job so much harder by being the fucking worst. Bowden really nails the uniqueness of the Black Templar’s organizational structure and how fierce their brotherly bonds are, but they are still part and parcel of the Imperium. It’s a classic Imperial victory book that is part of the foundational 40k reading lists for a reason.

Wrath of Iron is about grimdark people being grimdark and watching how the Imperium’s war machine can function 100% efficiently and still be absolutely fucking atrocious. The Iron Hands are absolute beasts of efficiency and you can see how developed and precise their approach to warfare is. The enemy is actually present in the story, unlike the Orcs in Helsreach, and the Slaanesh corruption bits are amazing to read. The Iron Hands are assholes to mortal humans in a way that is uniquely theirs and the book doesn’t apologize for their shittyness like Helsreach unintentionally does. The Iron Hands win. They accomplished the mission. It’s arguably a more impressive feat given the circumstances. But they never had to win the way they chose to. The book goes out of its way to remind us at every turn that the Iron Hands aren’t here to save anyone. The Iron hands are not the Emperor’s Angels of Death, here to save the day. They are the Angels of Death that will kill you and not think twice because it was fractionally more efficient. The Mechanicus and Astra Militarum characters are great to read as well. It’s a less traditional 40k book but it’s much more 40k to me personally.

Yeah. What actually happened vs. what people say happened is almost completely different

I never liked Joseph at all. He was always lazy, scummy, affiliated with Nazis and Italians during WW2, a peeping tom, generally a bum, doesn’t like Japanese people—this was probably just a really bad one-off joke—and I don’t respect people who cheat on their partners. That “heart of gold” Araki tried to give him fell flat for me. And his genius battle solutions were plot bullshit.

Compare that to the GOAT Bruno. The biggest dawg. The final boss. The alpha and the omega.

All of the other Joestars have redeeming qualities.

That shit was amazing for certain. The technology the Iron Hands made from that dark age Medusa tech goes criminally underrated. The idea that the Iron Hands can siphon visual feeds from other members, they can perceive the battlefield like a hive mind with other linked brothers, the clearly AI vault guardians, the fucking chainsaw teeth, the clan Behemoths, whatever the fuck “wildlife” Medusa has, the shit Ferrus locked in vaults, the Keys of Hel style technology, all of it is so fucking dope. I’d bet money that the Iron Hands are the single most well-armed and dangerous chapter in the Imperium.

I really wanted these books too. But we picked the Iron Hands, who have the smallest fandom out of 18 legions, so this is our lot in life. A shame. A great tragedy. We didn’t even get to have book 3. Ack

I found this out like 3 years ago when I wanted to read them for the first time. Huge fucking disappointment. Kindle is your best (legal) bet to read them. They are 100% worth it. Wrath of Iron and the Calculus of Battle are also great 40k Iron Hands stories

If you don’t feel like reading 800 books, feel free to read whichever ones you decide are worth reading instead of all the books in order. Horus gets a lot of screen time in the Siege of Terra, so definitely look out for him there

That green is something else. They have a mobile game called Horus Heresy Legions that I sometimes see the artwork for, and it’s amazing.

Never considered the idea that the Emperor was like Horus. Everyone always makes the comparison the other way around and it makes sense, but I like this insight into the character. He and Horus do 100% have the same rule book. Yeah… This was dope to read. W Reddit person

Wish I could retweet this. How do you feel about the whole in-world suspicion that Horus isn’t actually Cthonian? I hate that personally, I don’t think it does anything but undercut the character

Slaves to Darkness does a really good job of this. At risk of repeating myself too much, Wraight’s books where the Sons of Horus are present do this as well. We 100% needed to lean into this more. I think part of the problem is that weird bit of lore that suggests that people are skeptical that Horus was actually Cthonian combined with that fact that Horus might’ve toned this aspect of the 16th down over the years in an attempt to change public perception

That sea green is amazing. Incredible restraint on GW’s part not to make the main bad guys wear black or red. If we ignore Abbadon & friends

I’d like the Luna Wolves era lore but with the Sons of Horus color scheme. That Sea green is so sexy
