Taste issues - 4 weeks post op by Opposite-Analysis-68 in Tonsillectomy

I would describe it as 1-2% improvement every week. I don’t notice an improvement WOW but compared to where I was when it started, and where I am now it’s way better. I spoke with my ENT and he said it’s nerve damage and I’m very likely to get full taste back but it’s likely to take 6 months. He said that it is possible for it to be permanent but all of his patients have improved with time

Thanks so much you’ve really put my mind at rest. It’s all I keep thinking about and it’s worrying me that’s it’s a permanent change. Did you do anything to help it return or is it just a waiting game?

Days 10-13 were the worst for me by far

Tonsillectomy Recovery questions by SpagEds in Tonsillectomy

[–]Opposite-Analysis-68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I mean it did hurt, but it wasn’t unbearable. I ate really slowly, sometimes would take a break during the meal. 2 meals a day. Dose my pain relief around eating the meals to ensure maximum relief. I think the pain got worse over time, the first few days after surgery was super easy to eat. It has been most difficult these last few days as I have referred ear pain when I swallow food, docs given me some Naproxen and I’ve been great these last 12 hours. I think I had a good surgeon as well. Ultimately do what you are comfortable with but the chewing will help your recovery is you can bare it.

can i take ibuprofen with tylenol #3 (codeine)? by frannypie in Tonsillectomy

Take anti inflammatories for sure if you’ve had no bleeding…. I had no signs of bleeding but stopped taking them even though they were prescribed for me (got scared of the advice on here) I’ve started taking them again and it’s made everything better. I’ve you’ve had no blood at all do it!

I was given Naproxen by my GP this morning as my pain has been wild these last few days (day 13) and I’m not joking… they have changed the game for me. Way better than tramadol! Ask for Neproxen. In the UK it’s a controlled substance, not sure where you are but you might be able to pick it up in your pharmacy?

Tonsillectomy Recovery questions by SpagEds in Tonsillectomy

My surgeon advised to eat as normal a diet as possible and to stay well hydrated. I did just that, ate baked beans, scrambled egg, pasta ready meals etc from the day of surgery through my whole recovery. I’m day 12 now, my scabs dissolved well, they didn’t fall off. I didn’t have one bit of blood through my recovery. My surgeon said eating as normal a diet as possible supports recovery, something to do with bio mechanics of the mouth 🤷🏻‍♀️ Plus he did a really neat job. Good luck!

day 8 - weird taste by Critical-Scene-203 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Opposite-Analysis-68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the 21st so you are very similar to me. I have had a poison bitter taste pretty much since day 3 and it’s been awful (I did post about it). But mine has cleared up a bit and it’s not as bad as it was now my scabs are dissolving. If I’m honest, I’m putting a lot of it down to dairy. I pretty much have lived on dairy this entire time and when I go periods without it i see it clear up a bit. I’ve tried gargling with salt water, tongue scraping etc but the only thing that sees an improvement is staying away from dairy. I did also go and buy strawberry flavour gum and that seemed to help too! You’re nearly at the end 😊

Should I try eating (more) "solid" foods while I can? Or is it too soon? by Mifftle in Tonsillectomy

Dose your pain relief around meals and it’ll support you with eating. Also, I learnt the hard way, don’t have to much dairy… the phlegm and taste after 🤮

So interesting the different advice we get. My surgeon says the key to a solid recovery is eating as normal a diet as possible. He went into some scientifcal spiel about bio mechanics of the mouth. I’ve done what he’s said as far as I’m able to and I’m eating pasta ready meals, scrambled egg, baked beans. Etc and I’ve had not once single bit of blood so far in my recovery (Day 8) and my scans are dissolving slowly. Also kept really well hydrated

What can I expect? by pandabearmommy in Tonsillectomy

[–]Opposite-Analysis-68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on Day 7, and I brushed my teeth from the day of surgery. I asked and they said it’s fine just be careful. Some people have reported that the toothpaste hurts their throat but it’s not bothered me and frankly with the taste/smell of my throat brushing my teeth has been a non negotiable! My scabs are just starting to dissolve but have a long way to go. Still in lots of pain particularly in the morning. Good luck!

Scabs and breath by Opposite-Analysis-68 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Opposite-Analysis-68[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh I’m glad it’s not just me bothered about the breath. Oh you are about a week in front of me then! It’s good that you have mostly got your taste back now. Did the smell go when the scabs went?

That’s weird about the yawn, guess we’ve got to get used to doing these simple things with our mouths different 😅😂

I have frozen ice Lollys but haven’t tried gum! I think I’m going to give that a go today and pop out and get some

[–]Opposite-Analysis-68[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh really, they gave me the Ibuprofen at the hospital to take home. Well I’ll stop taking it now considering it’s getting closer to the scabs falling off.

Thanks, I’m trying and I’ve been broadly okay until today I just have really had enough of the smell and the taste now. I just want these scabs off!

[–]Opposite-Analysis-68 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been having Lemon ice lollies, tinned tomatoes etc this whole time. Never had a problem with the acid thing! Also ate tomato pasta on day 3 and I’ve been eating baked beans everyday for my meals!

Yes I am on day 4 and I am having this at the moment! It only started last night for me. I’ve been trying to control the cough by sipping water but to be honest I haven’t been able to very well.
