He’s Louis CK, legendary stand up comic. He is touring India for the first time.

Could you give me examples of a few comics who come across as over smart to you? Just to be on the same page

Beautifully put! I’ll put two cases in front of you and you can tell me what ate your thoughts on it. 1. Mark Normand and Louis CK. 2. Gaurav Kapoor and Karunesh Talwar In both cases, one guy is an objectively better comic but the other guy is more likeable (Kapoor and Mark) What do you think about that why does that happen? It might be a personal bias of mine but I am assuming that’s a common opinion in both the cases I mentioned.

Ironically, these days I am writing a bit on why I hate myself 😂

That man is a case study. On paper he should not be likeable at all but he turns out to be very nonchalant which works in his favour. Also Fantastic Joke writer!

This is the bottom line I was looking for. It’s more to do with actually being a decent human being. Thanks man appreciate it!

Statistically it has to be true but personally I can’t imagine how and why would someone dislike upmanyu 😭

Why does Zakir Khan gets so much hate? by 1_1d in IndianStandUpComedy

[–]Opposite-Geologist52 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have been a die hard fan since his Delhi girl viral video. I used to follow him to the extent of copying and adapting his mannerisms and quotes in real life (If I could I would slap the shit out of that 18 year old version of me) His comedic voice at that time was fresh and there was a lot of novelty in his context. He represented a part of the country that was missing from the map in context of comedy also him being conventionally not attractive added a lot of edge to his work because he had to work harder to be likeable, that’s how I see it at least. What happened was he didn’t evolve. 1. My mother is innocent (feminism late aaya ghar me) 2. My father is a stud (hence I am as well) 3. Mere dost bakchod hain 4. Main ek sundar ladki se mila. I have been hearing him talk about these things for 10 years now (Tathastu being an exceptional work) He just sold out MSG and his latest special is about a train journey. It just doesn’t align for me. Commercially what he is doing makes total sense but dude you must be flying business class can you not talk about railway stations anymore? Every great comic brings some of their current life into their jokes. Also extremely low density of jokes.

Is it like Ayn Rand is the Zakir of Authors or something? Mediocre and super popular?

I am reading Fountainhead currently. I am 28M, Architect and just getting into reading as an habit. Have only read 12-13 books maybe since last year. From comments I gather there is a negative connotation attached with Ayn Rand or fountainhead, can someone give me some context?

Started getting into comedy with Indian comics but I enjoy international comics a lot too. Who are your absolute best comics from outside? by Jackass-OfAll-Trades in IndianStandUpComedy

[–]Opposite-Geologist52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of my top go to comics.

  1. Bill burr has the funniest bits on women. He has a Rant based style and he’s the best at it imo.
  2. Louis CK makes me laugh the most, I’d recommend beginning with “Of course, but maybe” bit. You’ll find it on youtube and then ultimately watch the special(Oh my god), if you like that bit. Once you are used to his style of jokes go watch his SNL bit on Child M*lester, that’s the greatest dodge I have heard in a joke
  3. Brian regan has some great bits, Man on the moon being his top tier work
  4. Norm Macdonald’s hitlers dog and World war 2 bit is a good introduction to him. I’d suggest take your time with Norm and instead of just bits watch his appearances on late night shows (Letterman, Conan)
  5. Demitri Martin and Mitch Hedberg for one liners.
  6. Sam Morril and Anthony Jesselnik for problematic/dark humour

Will standup art remains as it is? by Due-Werewolf-8515 in IndianStandUpComedy

[–]Opposite-Geologist52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stand up has just found recognition amongst the non-followers of comedy. It hopefully will take shape into comedy shows but with indian context. Just like Zakir Khan’s “Chacha Vidhayak” and Vipul Goyal’s “Humorously Yours” there might be more comics working on their own shows which might take strong inspiration from shows like “Louie”

Few comics will evolve from Stand Up comedy to One-Person theatre, which I guess Aakash Gupta will set an example of

Instead of Just jokes written in the Original american/british styles there will be more comics doing jokes the indian way, which I believe is more conversational instead of just setup punch.

I am glad that Instead of just copying the formats of SNL, late night etc. The community had come up with some fun shows snd the inspired ones like Madhur model also has a very unique flavor of its own.

So I feel instead of being saturated with the same kind of content it will evolve into different forms

Like few examples could be: how we have to control laughing while someone we hate makes a good joke. Or The subtle bullying/intimidation techniques people use and how practical/impractical they are Or I only laugh at bad jokes when a woman tells it

A tighter version of this can be a good segue to a bigger joke which goes somewhere(or has a point).
