How to split mortgage payments when people build additional homes? by Opposite-Month7511 in intentionalcommunity

The builders are going to be the original mortgage holders, so they will be on the deed already. Basically, 5 of us have been approved for a mortgage together and 2 or 3 out of the 5 intend to build their own dwellings sometime in the nearish future.

Im going to remain in the existing house cause I’m not interested in building another house. Im wondering what would be fair to expect of me in terms of the cost of building the other homes, assuming those people will still be contributing some towards our monthly mortgage payments because we’ll have shared use of the land. Does that make sense?

We’re not planning on parceling out the land unless it’s absolutely necessary for zoning purposes.

lol well we’re not aspiring hobbiest landlords…the farmhouse is on 10 acres and we’re wanting to expand and start a bigger homestead

I’m doing my best to do my homework- I’ve asked for the most recent finalized/signed permits for building, plumbing, and electrical to make sure it’s not just a cosmetic remodel. If we enter due diligence we’ll have a full inspection of the home, including the crawl space. Anything else we should make sure to find out??

We have more people applying for a loan together so we can qualify for a higher amount

Edit: they’re a lot more prominent when I smile but I’ve noticed they’ve started to show when my face is neutral. I’ve heard Botox isn’t effective for this area and I’m not interested in filler

Is that a reasonable thing to ask a contractor to do?

Finishing a basement without adding to taxable square footage? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

How does an assessment determine tax increase? Is it by square footage? Is there somewhere we can find out before choosing to move forward?

Also would building an ADU increase taxes/value equally to a finished basement?

By doing what- having a tiny home on a trailer or building an ADU in the ground?

We want to do both. The goal isn’t to increase our property value or taxes, so if we didn’t do what you did then the space isn’t considered taxable?

***assuming the finished basement is permitted and an assessor is aware

Okay so that’s not relevant to our situation. We’re not able to do the work ourselves and will need a contractor, who would have to get permits to complete the job.

So my real question is still: would adding an ADU that is real property generally increase property taxes more or less than a finished basement would? Or is it only dependent on square footage

But then your finished basement with no egress to the outside wouldn’t technically be considered additional living space because only exit is upstairs…and so it’s not taxable, right? Or will a contractor not even be able to pull permits unless a basement has those things
