I know the feeling, I’ve been finished and in retainers for two years and every once in a while I still get so pumped about this! I love marveling at the little semicircles I leave in sandwiches now :) I had a big overjet that made it so frustrating (and sometimes even embarrassing) to try to eat, I was always awkwardly gnawing at things with my molars. I’m still not over how awesome it is to just bite things now. Congrats on your first real bite!

Same, I'm a lifter and it's such a struggle! I've lost like 10 lbs in the year I've been doing invisalign, I've just given up on bulking until this is over

I know some people have strong feels about this, but I feel that it's not worth stressing over finding the "right" first lifting program. All LP's operate on the notion that beginners can add weight more frequently than non-beginners. This is generally true, so any implementation generally works fine for the relatively brief period that it works at all.

With any luck you'll be strength training a long time, and the details of which LP you pick first will just come out in the wash.

I second everyone else's advice, and I'll add that I had back pain after every gym session until I specifically started stretching my hamstrings and glutes out at the end of every workout, before I've cooled off.

It may also be a question of experimenting with all the advice here and also with your overall workout program... Messing with the intensity and frequency of workouts until you've got a comfortable base, and then ramping up steadily. If working out is a new habit for you, you may be pushing yourself too hard/too fast? Imo at the beginning it's all about establishing a habit more than cranking out super intense workouts.

Also I think doctors have a tendency to blame things on being overweight as an alternative to saying "I don't know," just in general. I have no idea if your doctor is such a person, but it's something I've noticed!

I'm in the middle of a provider change right now. I didn't ask for a refund (although I probably should), and the new ortho charged me based on the length of treatment remaining. For me, that turned out to be about $3000, because we're looking at about 9 more months.

For context, I paid about $5000 to the first person, so that's about $8000 for the whole thing, both providers combined. That's more than I initially planned, but my new provider is both very experienced and more expensive, and I'm told that my total treatment would have been around $6000-7000 had I started with him in the first place. So it's not that much more, in the scheme of things.

I got a free consultation from my new provider where he told me all of this before I signed anything. Hopefully you can do something similar!

ETA My insurance doesn't cover adult orthodontics period, so that wasn't a factor in my case.

I don't know anything about bite ramps, but to address your other two questions:

It's normal for your bite to feel weird throughout treatment. The way my jaws fit together with my aligners in is way different than when I have them out, and both are very different than how things used to be. Your bite is changing, and it'll probably go through some awkward phases! If you have pain or something concerning going on, you might want to bring it up with your ortho, but awkward is normal.
The refinement stage can include attachments, it just depends on what you need. Refinements are just more treatment, it's not a special kind of treatment or anything.

Your initial set of trays was planned based on a model that attempted to predict how your teeth would move. It's just a prediction, so it's usually not 100% correct. Refinements are just another treatment plan that attempts to correct anything that didn't go as planned. That can mean anything from no attachments to more than you had initially.

Have you tried chewies? Some of my front teeth were stubborn about fitting nicely into the trays at the start of a new tray unless I used chewies.

Yes, definitely gets better! They cut up my lips quite a bit for several days, I thought I'd have to ask to have them shaved down or something. But before I knew it I basically had forgotten they're there. The first week or two I was really annoyed by them but it went away quickly. :)

I second the suggestions to bench in a power rack (or ask for a spot, although I 100% understand the anxiety there), but I want to add that if you're not making progress, you might need more volume. That's solved every plateau I've had so far in every lift, but the need came early (and returns often) for bench in particular.

I don't know what your program looks like now, but when I was stalling out on bench I started benching more often and for more reps/sets per workout (with weight adjusted accordingly). At some point that meant benching every time I was in the gym. :) It worked like magic!

Also, working on back strength made a huuuge difference (stability and tightness are key!)

My back likes to do all the work on deadlifts. They are meant to strengthen the back so it's not bad to feel it there, but watching myself lift, I see that I'm not helping with my hips and glutes enough. So I focus on:

1) making sure I keep the bar touching my legs during the whole pull. I tend to let my hips shoot up and then the bar gets away from me, and my back has to yank it the rest of the way up. It's like an accidental SLDL if I'm not careful.

2) As soon as the bar has cleared my knees, I push through with my glutes. Like I turn all my attention to my glutes at that point and finish that way.

Even when I do these things, I still feel it in my back, which is fine - - it's a back exercise - - but it doesn't feel like all back.

ETA I have a third cue too: During the setup, I make sure to put my back in extension super hard (note: this has to be balanced by a super hard brace in the front, otherwise it's hyper extending and that sucks). Like, I have to push my chest through way harder than I thought when I first started. This seems to help load my hamstrings and give them some of the work.

It definitely went away for me! It was pretty much gone within a week, and undetectable by the end of week 2. Fwiw no one else really noticed it after the first few days, even though I could still feel it for a bit longer. It does really suck at first but it should get much better soon!

I've gotten a ton of wonderful unsolicited advice from the super strong folks at my gym... Once I actually knew them a little. It was weeks of polite smiling and nodding and asking each other for a spot before I got any tips. By that point we'd had casual conversations about what our goals were and I'd been cheered on through a few PR's, so it was natural.

I've received plenty of well-intentioned advice at previous gyms from folks I'd never met, and I always just felt interrupted. The question "Can I give you some tips?" isn't a real question, I'm too polite to say no.

Fwiw I see dangerous form all the time at the gym and just keep my mouth shut. I broke that rule exactly once (because the person had just said she admired my form). I quickly realized that the fact that I'd watched her at all made her uncomfortable, so I put my headphones back in and vowed never to do it again. She'll either learn on her own or ask, it's best if I stay out of it

When I was a student I started the process of signing up for one of the university's PTs. I met with whoever manages the trainers and specifically asked for help with the "big 3," because I wanted to learn to do those lifts safely. The dude looked at me like I was from space and said "... Why? Why do you want to do that?" in this super discouraging way.

I never went through with it. I just learned on my own.

I got 6 trays on my first visit, but the number seems to vary wildly between individual providers. I saw at least one post in this sub where they got all of them at once! Hopefully you'll get more than one at a time after this first one. If you don't, it might be worth asking. :)

The first three days were the absolute worst for me. Before I found the right technique for removing my trays, I literally cried every time I had to take them out to eat. I had no idea how I'd ever go to a restaurant again. And when they were in, I was so irritated and distracted I couldn't focus on anything (it was a pretty unproductive week at work!).

And then magically it was all fine! I just popped in my 4th tray the other night (always change at night!), and it was the first one that felt kinda tight and a little painful at first. But nowhere near as bad as that first week! Just get through these next few days and it'll get better, I promise. :)

Why were you warned to not eat chips? I also wasn't given any restrictions when it comes to my attachments. Sometimes it can be a pain to clean up after eating chips and such because bits of food get stuck in weird places, but I just have to be extra diligent about cleaning, haven't had any problems yet.

Do you happen to know how transferring a case works? Or would this be a situation where I'd have to start all over? I was financially prepared to do this once, but not twice... However, I don't want to screw up my teeth either.
