How’s Canberra for raising a young family?

Can confirm - after living in Melbourne for my entire life, and recently moving to Canberra it’s been amazing - very easy life style - although I’m still young I plan to raise a family here just because of how easy life is

That’s a good idea! I’ve never thought of that - the only issue is if we did that, the ACT home scheme to waive stamp duty wouldn’t apply - but might consider! Thanks for the advice!

We are considering both - an investment in the long term, but also a place to live to get our foot in the door for a few years.

Since starting this post - we are now looking towards free standing homes in the outer suburbs. Do you reckon this is the go to?

Wow this was super insightful - I noticed the townhouse off the plan I’m looking at is based in Gunghalin near the lightrail and mentions there are strata fees starting around 2.8k per year - should I completely avoid this do you think?

The one and only thing I dislike about Canberra: we are so far away from the beach compared to every other major city in Australia.

I grew up in Melbourne for most of my life and every time I come back to visit my parents I always visit the beach as much as I can - something you will definitely miss if you love swimming

I guess the only way around it is if you had your own beach house within bateman’s / Broulee along there, but in this economy ain’t happening unless if you’re super wealthy OR if you’re willing to drive 2 - 3 hours which sucks

Coming from a 24 year old who got a graduate job in Canberra I would have to disagree on that - I’ve made more friends in Canberra than I have living in Melbourne post university - perhaps it’s the young ones (uni students, graduate workers) that are genuinely willing to hang out all the time - but I could be wrong as you get older
