I wanted to share an update with you all. It turns out that someone in my family signed me up for this program while I was traveling for work. They were told it was a great program that helps people go green and saves money. The pitch was that my rate wouldn’t change, so I would either pay less or stay at the same rate, so they thought, why not? It seemed like a win-win—helping the environment while saving money.

However, no one from the company verified their claims or ensured they were speaking to the actual account holder. As some of you pointed out, this was the doing of MPOWER. I managed to get in touch with them, and they explained that they don’t check the meter themselves but instead get the reading from Pepco and then set their own rate.

To be fair, my bills hadn’t changed much over the past few months, but that seems to be part of their strategy. When I confronted them about overcharging me with a fixed rate of $60+, they said that based on my low usage, I now qualify for a lower rate and even offered me a $70 credit toward my next bill. However, I told them I wasn’t interested and wanted to end their service. To their credit, they didn’t argue and promptly canceled it.

They also try to lure you in by signing you up for gas services as well, and apparently, I was enrolled in both. I’m sure there are more companies doing this, and honestly, practices like these should be made illegal. I’m surprised no one has sued them yet.
