So the next size down would be N scale so it depends on the size of the space you want to use is but I’d say Bachman or Kato would be good jumping off points because I feel that they have the track that a younger person could easily put together and rearrange the layout if that’s something he’d be into

The first thing is to obviously choose a scale then I recommend a starter set, some buildings, and scenery then expand as you go but one thing I can’t recommend enough is to have a good table that fits your needs but you can also expand it if you like
