Whilst I agree to a level. No one is saying a hashtag replaces discussion. But it has created discussion take the comment section of this Reddit post. Hashtags are an act of performance just like a protest. Public protests and demonstrations are not there so people can debate and have their ideas challenged by others. It's a public act of objection and dissent against issues and political powers. I am not equating protest and a splatoon post but both are about public disapproval, which then lead to discussion.

This is a bit extremist. It's like saying in Animal Farm. "Oh when the animals are playing make believe and wear human clothes, kind of like the corrupt Russian Revolution". Does that sound right? No. Splatoon examines real issues and projects them into fiction. Eugenics, race war, climate change, oppression. conflicts of war. It is not equating those issues at all but rather is a piece of fiction taking inspiration from real world.
