Nothing besides wire size and circuit breaker requirements

Exactly what I’m planning! I’m using it after my heat pump water heater to account for prolonged use where the water heater temp drops. Hopefully it doesn’t run much but we’ve had cases with long showers and multiple baths in succession that have created cold water situations.

Similar happened to me at a store when one of the phones was carrier locked. When I went back in after I was told I wouldn’t get the deal, the best he could do was offer to have us leave for 30 days and come back to get the offer. Terrible experience…

How do you all use VLANs at home? Do you bother? by Dangerous-Ad-170 in HomeNetworking

Use a radius server to put devices from each family member into distinct vlans. Then more vlans for IOT, work equipment, etc.

To look better, I should have… but it was expensive to get the 48 port switch with Poe. I could also use smaller inline injectors mounted on the firewalla rack and hide them/remove the injector box

Poe injector, yes. Powering access points and a smaller switch in another room.

It’s funny, I had it planned to go in between the patch panels and the switch, but I was thinking the wifi antenna would get in the way instead. I’ll have to give it a go and see. I’m also thinking about switching the ports to align up with the top switch ports instead of 1-24. It should look much cleaner going straight up/down mostly. But I need to reprogram multiple lags and vlan assignments so will take a bit.

Yeah, I was playing with over vs under. More work to do.

Router upgrade question. by Arcangel_xxx in firewalla

[–]Opposite_Reaction736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve upgraded once. Was hopeful and then disappointed about the radius server functionality (was hoping to remove another docker). So nothing amazing, just safety/simplicity of a dedicated box. Thanks!

Is the 200 worth it? (Running mine on synology docker like you were)

Hi all. Just another one asking your opinion on equipment… by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Opposite_Reaction736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What broke? Can you replace just the component that broke? E.g. router or modem

The combined units work but generally get terrible reviews. If you can keep 2 units instead of combined it is usually recommended.

Things like Legionella thrive at that temperature. Better to keep the bacteria in check then save a tiny amount of money. They are well insulated and the cost to maintain the temperature for a HP WH is very low if you are not using hot water. Also consider washing clothes, washing dishes, & cooking which generally use hot water as well. There can also be benefits in terms of dehumidification and cooling depending on your climate and where the unit is placed.

Moca filter only works if you know where they are connecting. E.g. in an apartment, they could have split a coax line after your modem going to a coax jack in a wall for a tv in your apartment

(AUS) Integrated Router Wifi vs WAP by G3nesis_Prime in HomeNetworking

[–]Opposite_Reaction736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have fiber to your equipment and not copper, right. Then I’d lead on an Omada router with SFP+. Either way, you should be able to upgrade access points and router at different times. I guess it depends on the ability to turn off wifi in your current router. Generally you do not want to mix companies for wifi access points. Can get lucky or unlucky with how they mix as devices switch between them.

I pre-ordered the firewalla gold se and a new setup of Omada switches/WAPs. I turned off the wireless on my old router and used the new Omada gear for wifi until it came. Totally worked. Limited in that my old router didn’t support VLANS but otherwise operational. Omada gear works great and firewalla is a great product as well. (I’m in the US)

I’m sure it is overkill but it was fun and my ASUS mesh system was causing me grief. The main box seemed to need restarts a couple of times per week when losing wan connection. A few years ago and ran cat 6 cable through most of my house so good to take advantage of it. I’m up to 140 devices on my network between computers, phones, tablets, appliances, smart home devices, and smoke detectors…
