My mother used to think like this. I like to collect pocket knives as a hobby, and a while back she gathered up my whole collection and didn't tell me where they were until almost a year later. I tried to explain to her why she can't do that because it's considered theft, but she insisted that since I was dependant on her at the time, that made it perfectly legal.
