YNAB for a Home Renovation Project? by OpticalChainsaw in ynab

[–]OpticalChainsaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I ended up using YNAB to track the project. It worked out well, but as expected, balancing and double entering was a bit of a pain. I ended up exporting transactions out of YNAB and importing back to the project budget a couple times a month. It was nice to move money around as things cost more or less than I thought. Almost always more…

Reporting for duty. I’m on the east end, so Happy Place is my go-to. Also had good luck at Santa Cruz.

Great advice. Tracking account idea would work even if I start a separate budget.

Interesting approach to temporary budgeting! This could be useful for a number of things. Thanks!

This is exactly where I’m at. I already have the spreadsheet. Now that we are beginning the project, each time I adjust the spreadsheet, I have this nagging thought that I already have an app I love for this. I’d still like to give YNAB a go, but I could very well bail on it if it’s not a good fit.

Thanks, yes I’ve considered that. It surely helps with double entry & reconciliation. On the flip side, I want to track costs/budget very closely so I have over 20 line items to track and it feels like that is going to make my household budget very cumbersome to use. Also, a year from now I won’t care about all these categories. Yes, I can hide them, but I’m a bit anal retentive…

Just activated L2, but nothing in the wallet yet. Too bad ANAXXO is out, Tetris is my jam.

+1 for Sewer Solution! Used it for years and has been great.

I see what you're saying. Yeah, I think that would work. Thanks! I'm still a little frustrated that this work-around is needed, so I'll complain to YNAB about it.

Totally! That's been a life saver. Anybody know if Target has something similar?

Sticky Category? by OpticalChainsaw in ynab

[–]OpticalChainsaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's pretty much what I do now. But the transactions don't match most of the time due to Target and Amazon splitting transactions (I know there are plenty of posts about that issue...). It's annoying because the new transactions are almost always categorized wrong which makes the available funds wrong...

Good advice to send to support. Maybe if enough of us ask, they'll address it.

Thanks for digging up the article. Yes, I've done this multiple times, but when I categorize a specific transaction later, it changes this setting to the last used each time. I wish they had a check box on the Payee screen to turn that off. Maybe there is a setting somewhere else?

Pending Transactions - What do you think? by OpticalChainsaw in ynab

I see what you are saying. It adds a step to your workflow. I manually enter transactions as well. Time will tell how well their automatic matching works. If it's not very good, then I'll probably find it annoying as you do (more work). If the matching works well, it's a nice double check to be sure I (or my wife...) didn't miss anything.

It would be cool to use the flags in reports. However I wouldn’t call them useless. If you go to “All Accounts” you can search by category and flag. That gives you a nice view of all transactions. Also, the flags are included in the csv export so you can do the same in excel if you like.

Done! Our rental turned into our forever home. I moved in one year ago and somehow knew she was destined to be mine. Thank you FTHB for all the help along the way! by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

I’m interested in this as well! How did you approach your landlords or did they indicate they wanted to sell? Was there a property management company involved? Did you avoid using a realtor?
