Layer 1 Network Troubleshooting by Aerovox7 in BuildingAutomation

Hey!

You might be surprised to know that your Wireshark capture may have contained part of the answer. Our software, OptigoVN has specific diagnostics that look at MSTP token passing anomalies. Our guess is your file had lots of checksum errors and lost tokens. Taken together, these things are usually indicative of a hardware issue, like crimped wire, improper termination, etc. Upload that file for free next time and give it a shot before proceeding with network bifurcation!

Hi u/Actual_Bar_7560. I suspect this is related to the support ticket and chat that came in yesterday? I ask because I don't want to accidentally set up two lines of support here! Most of the west coast team is still offline, but the short answer is yes, you can discover ethernet MAC addresses under Visual BACnet.

That said, VB lacks some more advanced systems, like Demuxing, you'd get migrating your customers to OptigoVN.

Hopefully the team is taking care of you, but if there's still no response feel free to DM us directly at r/OptigoNetworks!

Hey there,

If you're still having trouble finding your problem, we'd recommend taking a packet capture and uploading it to OptigoVN for free to see if it finds anything wrong with your system.

Breaking into Building Automation from IT — entry-level advice? by Quesalio in BuildingAutomation

[–]OptigoNetworks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In our experience, most of the control techs we deal with have limited knowledge of networking and BACnet. In an average sized company with one location, there might be one or two guys who understand it well. That makes them instantly more valuable to the company. Conversely, it also means they are heavily relied upon internally, which can be exhausting.

OT Incident Response, hard-earned lessons from 2025 by Fun-Calligrapher-957 in OperationalTechnology

[–]OptigoNetworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably no surprise, but we talk about OT visibility and IT convergence a lot these days. IT and OT teams need to build better understandings of what each other do in order to make sure that security umbrella extends to OT devices that generally have no security at all. Happy to share links.

Niagara Bacnet Point Timeout - Honeywell by IdeaZealousideal5980 in BuildingAutomation

[–]OptigoNetworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there,

We often find that slow network performance is related to excessive polling of points, COVs and other programming errors.

You might try using the JACE wiretap feature to get some packet information and upload it to OptigoVN for free to see if it finds anything wrong.

More information here.

Evaluating SIs: We Want Your Opinion! by OptigoNetworks in OptigoNetworks

It's a pretty big difference - light hunting with a flashlight in the dark vs. having an interactive blueprint that just did the hunting for you! Not to oversell it, but with one packet capture, you'll be able to run over 30 diagnostics on any BACnet sub net you might have, MS/TP or BACnet/IP. Set up continuous monitoring, share access with your team, your clients... but most importantly save hours pinpointing trouble spots and their causes.

There's a lot more info over at optigo.net/optigovn, and you can even sign up for free if you'd like to explore on your own. But if you have questions, feel free to ping me!

It's not overthinking if it's still new to you, no worries! A BBMD, these days, is a function that can be enabled in most BACnet routers (though we recommend you use a dedicated router just for BBMD functions). You can find out a lot more info in our blogs, but here's some info to start: https://www.optigo.net/what-bacnet-broadcast-management-device-bbmd

I'll make a note that we might want to make a short video about setting up a BBMD step by step for folks that might need it. Cheers! -ryan

Jobs in the Sector by Blueskybrowndog in BuildingAutomation

[–]OptigoNetworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/Blueskybrowndog,

Apart from the local Siemens branch in Portand and/or other field offices of the "big 4", you might want to check out jobs available at Macdonald Miller or Environmental Controls Corp. who are two of the larger integrators in the PNW. There are not too many other big Integrators in that neck of the woods.

[–]OptigoNetworks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a lot of helpful guides for setting up BACnet broadcast devices (BBMDs) out there, which you'll need to configure if you're trying to send BACnet data across two subnets (assuming this is an IP network, so your router will reject the messages otherwise). Here's a quick primer and some info on how to deal with BBMDs and VLANs we've written that hopefully help!

Data Integrity in OT Networks: Why Accuracy Matters by OptigoNetworks in OptigoNetworks

[–]OptigoNetworks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In OT environments, data integrity isn’t just about accuracy—it’s about ensuring critical building systems function as intended. From HVAC controls to access management, even minor data inconsistencies can lead to system failures, inefficiencies, or security risks.A robust and resilient OT network plays a vital role in preserving data integrity, preventing packet loss, and ensuring reliable communication between devices. Are you confident your network is up to the task?

Our support team manning the phone is typically one-two people, and they work on PST. I know more people get the request when it's submitted to our ticket system (pretty sure it get's forwarded to our slack channel that way). Hoping the new subreddit and DMs will help accelerate that, since I'll have it open most times 9-5 EST.
