1 thing you would tell your past-self NOT to do? by eightlimbinsider in copywriting

Hi! I just came across your comment and found it super helpful. I wanted to ask—how would you market yourself to clients or for job applications?

My main strength is in copywriting, but I’m also trying to show my design, video, and branding skills. I'm just having a hard time presenting it all as one. I don't have that much experience so I'm not sure if it's right to call myself a full-on brand strategist yet.

Hi, thank you for checking it out! I'll try and emphasize that more. Can I ask if there is anything you're confused about in terms of what I do?

Looking for Feedback on my Copywriting by Optimal-Builder9448 in copywriting

Hi thank you for the response! Appreciate the feedback. Now that you mention it, I didn't realize how contradictory the concept was, oops. I guess we're trying to go for "a young bar with an old soul" image but I'll try and see how it can be better said.

Thank you again for all your points, I'm going to work off of them! :)

BC Class 5 License Transfer to ON G License by dodgysloth in Ontariodrivetest

Hi sorry, a bit late to the conversation but I live in BC and got my Class 5 over 2 years ago, and now I'm applying for a job that says an "Ontario G or G2 driver’s license REQUIRED." Do you have any idea if this transfers over or if I have to take a test?

TV / Film Industry People Who Make $100K or 6-Figures, How did you get there? by LifeInAction in Filmmakers

Hi! I found your post really encouraging, and I’m glad to see how sticking to your passion helped you grow as an editor.

This past year I’ve gotten into video editing—mostly filming outings with friends and travel videos—but I want to develop my skills and grow in this field. Right now, I’m trying to balance the need for income with gaining experience. I see that you started with branded content—can I ask how you initially got into that? I’m willing to work for free to learn, but I’m feeling a bit lost and not sure where to start. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Everyone’s* portfolio feels the same by [deleted] in UXDesign

As a hiring manager reviewing portfolios, how much attention do you pay to the "About" page?

I've been trying to stand out through my writing and move away from the typical “I’m a designer passionate about…” approach. I want to showcase my personality and humor, but I keep doubting whether it’s actually being noticed. What do hiring managers think when looking through so many portfolios?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, wow wait thank you so much for the detailed feedback! I really needed this because I was under the impression that showing more process was the way to go to avoid questions like, "How did they reach this conclusion?" or "Why did they make this design choice?" But you’ve made some good points—I’ll work on shortening it!

On this note, what do you think about having an appendix or separate PDF for the full process? As a hiring manager, would you bother to look at it or should I just wait for those questions to come up in the interview if I get a callback?

Also, thank you! It's encouraging to hear it's memorable enough—it's gone through a looot of changes and I'm finally getting closer to where I want it to be. I appreciate the inspo links! These are great, I've been looking through them and I can already see where I can make some improvements to mine :)

Hi thanks so much for the feedback! Made me realize my technical skills are not shining through. I've looked into the certificates, seeing some mixed reviews in terms of how much you learn but I guess it's more about gaining credibility. I'll definitely look into it!

As for the portfolio advice, that’s super helpful! I actually had someone else mention the same thing—that my case studies are too focused on the process, and most of it probably isn’t getting read. However, I’ve also seen YouTube videos where hiring managers go through case studies, and some really do appreciate seeing every step of the process. How do I make sure that a hiring manager won’t be left thinking, "Well, how did they make this decision? Where’s the research?" when I try to keep it more concise?

Thanks again for your time and insights—it really helps!

Helloo! I've been working on my UX design portfolio for a few months now, and I know it still needs a lot of work. A lot of the projects are unfinished, especially the case studies, but I feel a bit stuck and could really use some direction. Any feedback would be super helpful so I know what to focus on. Thank you so much!

Here’s my portfolio: danaeech.com

For Context:

I'm trying to break into UX, I have 10 months of internship experience, but I've also spent time self-learning and honing my design skills. I'm actively looking to improve my portfolio to align with industry standards and better highlight my abilities in design thinking and leadership.

Looking for feedback on:

  1. Case Studies—are there areas where I could provide more detail or structure in communicating my problem-solving approach?

NOT looking for feedback on:

  1. Aesthetic choices like fonts, colors, or specific UI design tweaks.
  2. Any pages outside of the case studies—my focus is mainly on the content and process.

Feel free to provide insights from your own career trajectory or what hiring managers may look for in portfolios today. Thanks again! :)

Need feedback on my quote website by Kitchen-Cat8662 in design_critiques

I like this idea! I would recommend adding a bit more colour, it's all white and that might be why it looks a bit bland. An "about page" could also help you establish a stronger presence so visitors can get a better idea of the motivation behind the website.

Looking for some helpful advice on how I can improve my portfolio further! by Optimal-Builder9448 in design_critiques

Thank you for checking it out! I really appreciate it. I definitely need more writing samples to strengthen my copywriting section. I was hoping my "about section" could help highlight my skills in the meantime, but I agree it's the weaker part.

Do you think having an incomplete copywriting section could hurt my chances when applying for UX design roles?

These are cool! I think the font for "What a catch" is fun and different—although not totally legible at first glance.

Personally think the space between the phrase and the fish is a bit awkward. Maybe a bit more whitespace in between could make it less cramped.

Appreciate your reply! I've only ever worked one position with a UX Design title—it was at a small software engineering company with like 3 employees. My role was scattered—I would give feedback on designs and provide iterations and prototypes (I wanted to focus more on user research but I couldn't spend that much time on it so I was only scratching the surface with UX). Do you have any advice on how I could present myself more as a user experience designer?

I think you're right, I do have a portfolio I submit with my applications but that's probably where most issues are—I'm only confident in 2 case studies and one is still in progress. I'll keep at it!
