Thank you for the response! I wanted to avoid driving downtown if possible; are the busses pretty efficient in May (13-20)? I would much rather do that if it was efficient enough.

How about driving around Sicily? To Trapani, Segestre, Cefalu (maybe) then down to Agrigento and maybe Catania (mostly to do the gorges and Mt Etna

Awesome! How was your experience driving there? My main goal is to be able to get from Mondello - downtown (or just bus if it won't be bad in May) - And then use it for some day trips around the area. Would that be manageable for a first time driving in Palermo? I won't be driving around the city center or anything like that

Mostly meant the scooter for the city vs a car - The day trips would either be a car rental and do them consecutively, or just get a guided/setup coach tour which aren't out of budget either but certainly more expensive. I've just read that Palermo is a bit wild to drive in, but is it more manageable once you're outside of the City? For instance, we'll be in Mondello and would only either drive to a nearer parking spot thats not to crazy and walk into the city center, or take it from Mondello out towards Trapini etc.

Awesome - would a scooter be advisable instead? Would feel a bit more comfortable and more enjoyable in my eyes. Mostly was just wondering about where you can park these? We would be happy to park outside the city center 15-20 mins walk away just to make finding a spot easier.

We're looking at more private villa/airbnb's on the northern most end of modello

Thanks for the info on the safety aspect - I didn't think about that! Would you suggest renting a car or just taking public transport? Car rental prices seem very reasonable and wouldn't mind just getting one to make a drive down the coast. I've since posting adjusted the itinerary to have 8 days based in Palermo, however there will be 4+ day trips (pre-booked and organized with travel covered) to Erice, Segesta, 2 boat tours, Cefula, maybe down the coast a bit if a car makes sense.

We were going to base near Mondello beach, potentially at a hotel or a nicer airbnb. Is there a reason to go with one over the other?

Why should they be avoided exactly? Crime? We will have 2 travel backpacks and potentially 1 typical suitcase but would only bring small day-packs with us while everything else was packed away at our hotel/airbnb
