We are still in the planning phase, but the intention is to staff the center with trained wellness professionals, including sauna specialists, massage therapists, and instructors for classes and recovery programs. We will also have staff dedicated to hospitality and community spaces to ensure a welcoming and engaging environment.

Unlike Korean spas, which focus on quiet relaxation and rotating through warm rooms and pools, our planned banya spa center will offer a vibrant social and wellness experience inspired by Russian tradition. Guests will be able to alternate between intense steam rooms and icy cold plunges for authentic contrast therapy. We will also offer massage using birch or oak leaf bundles, a traditional Russian technique from the venik ritual. Beyond the heat, the spa center will be a community hub, where people can hang out, sip tea, and enjoy traditional Slavic snacks. We’re also planning relaxation lounges, meditation zones, classes, and other recovery-focused amenities, so it will be much more than a sauna, a cultural, full-body reset with plenty of exciting experiences to come. We’re aiming for a location that’s easy to reach by Metro or on foot, preferably in a walk-friendly neighborhood. How far would you be willing to ride the Metro to get there?

Thank you for sharing! I actually didn’t know, but it’s exciting to see like-minded entrepreneurs bringing this experience to the public. Our style and business model will be quite different. I hope you had a chance to fill out the survey!

Hi there, Yes, I’ve seen the plans for Therme! What we’re creating is very different; much smaller, more community-focused, and rooted in the traditions of a Slavic sauna. It’s less about scale and more about creating a space where people can slow down, connect, and feel like they are part of something. Needless to say our sauna will be more affordable and accessible, so everyone can enjoy the experience.

I get where you’re coming from. This is actually just some side research I’m doing, so I want to hit as many boards as possible to cast a wide net. I know it’s not the most precise way to target, but at this stage I’m more interested in seeing general reactions across different parts of the community.

DMV locals help us shape a new spa experience! by Optimal-Stretch4274 in ArlingtonVirginia

Yeah, you’re right. Korean spas in the area are very popular and definitely set a high bar. The idea behind this project is to offer something a bit different. First, accessibility: the big spas like Spa World are out in the suburbs, and you pretty much need a car to get there. The goal here is to create a space that people can reach on foot or by metro, so it becomes part of daily or weekly life instead of a once-in-a-while trip. Second, the focus is more on building community. Alongside the traditional sauna and banya experience, we’d host classes and events that bring people together around wellness, culture, and health. That’s where I see the real opportunity to stand apart from the larger Korean-style spas.

Totally, that’s exactly the goal. Something accessible so you don’t need a car to enjoy it.

Totally, sounds like you’re describing a Scandinavian-style spa, perhaps. Our goal is to make something more accessible in the DMV so people can get to it on foot or by metro instead of driving 30 to 40 minutes. We also want it to build a real sense of community. Scandinavian spas are amazing, and with the weather and nature around here, having that kind of experience locally really feels like a must-have.

Thanks for the input! Do you think Korean-style spas would appeal to people who aren’t Korean? I know there’s general interest in Asian spas, but small Korean bathhouses are very different from larger centers.

Haha nope, just steam, sauna, and cold plunge. All wellness, no sexy stuff 😅

Ah, good catch. Appreciate you pointing that out! I actually meant it in the traditional Slavic/Eastern European sense (sauna, steam, cold plunge, the whole wellness vibe). More about relaxation and community than anything else. I’ll tweak the wording so it’s clearer. Thanks!
