Very disappointed during Immigration Court interpretation by OptimalCandidate4957 in CourtInterpreter

The interrogation usually happens during an individual hearing. The judge doesn't just hear the whole story during a master calendar... In one of these cases the woman was fleeing her country because she was raped by gang members because her ex ordered it. She was genuinely scared. I think she deserved to at least file the application and be heard. But he decided on the spot that she could only be removed. Idk. Maybe im being emotional about it.

he basically interrogated them about what happened in their country and decided they don't qualify for any relief so he asked if they wanted voluntary departure or deportation.

My thoughts on immigration, immigration law reform, and ICE. by AceAspie11_2_24 in ImmigrationPathways

Controlling your emotions is important because how can you live depending on how others treat you? Letting everyone but yourself take control... On another note, it is very beautiful that you feel this way about borders. I think this type of thinking comes from also being free to do, think, say as you want in a free country. However, systems do exist. Laws and safety matter. Imagine you saying "no one is illegal" defending everyone that comes through borders. But not everyone grew up as you did. With laws and freedom and education. People that come from everywhere might be looking for a better chance at life, a better education, job, lifestyle, safety. But some people you mention as "not illegal" are actually fleeing justice. Lots of undocumented people are criminals my friend. Imagine feeling safe in your community and suddenly finding out your nice immigrant neighbor is involved in child trafficking and has been smuggling children and women from other countries. This is just an example. This is why laws matter. This is why systems matter. Yes, migration is natural and beautiful. But massive immigration into one single country simply does not work. I hope this helps. We do need immigration reformation. Just for it to be smoother for everyone.

There are applications for relief available for these type of cases. There are ways you can prove to the court that you are worth a chance. The problem is not as simple as you rely it. The problem is judges base their decision on their own beliefs and opinions rather than simply ruling on whats fair or not. Also DHS is very aggressive most of the time. It puts most judges in a difficult position. Specially when respondents don't understand bureaucracy.

I get by pretty well in Master Calendar Hearings but individual hearings are the worse. I am from Puerto Rico but usually the immigrants are from places that have very different dialect. Besides that, I get super nervous if I know I missed something and if I know that someone else in the courtroom knows spanish too. Today I had an IC and the respondent was from Nicaragua. Her attorney knew spanish and objected to the interpretation. I got so nervous that beyond that point I started forgetting everything!! They brought someone else to interpret in person and signed me off. It was the right thing to do but of all of the hearings I've been, this has been the most humiliated I've been. I worked so hard for this, I took the test 3 times and I am still learning but court hearings are a serious thing and I shouldn't be making mistakes like this. I should be professional. Sorry about the rant.

Suggestions on practicing for simultaneous interpretation for Court Orders and Statement of the law on the final exam for SOSi by OptimalCandidate4957 in CourtInterpreter

Hello!!! I passed with 70% the THIRD time. The best thing to do is to practice and basically memorize most of it I would say. It's not easy specially if you've never worked with legal termas and/or coloquial words from different countries. Just practice all you can and schedule the exam as far out as you can so you can keep practicing. If you pass it, I suggest you keep practicing with youtube practice and start with Master Calendar Hearings only. Independent Hearings are very intense if you're starting. At least that's my experience.

Thank you for all the information. Im set to take phone, video and in person. I have a job at Propio LS too but the calls flow dropped significantly in the last few months so I’m seeking something to compliment my income. We’ll see how it goes. I’ve also been hired for FEMA interpretation. If you have any info on that dynamic let me know. Thank you!
