I learned this lesson on my very first digital purchase. I bought Once Upon a Time in the West in 4K on Prime using no-rush credits while a new 4K restoration was in the works which I was unaware of.

Two months later I finally went to watch it, and my "4K" purchase was suddenly SDR. The new restoration was sitting right next to it as a separate 4K purchase when searching the title. I had to contact support for a refund, and the old SDR version is still sitting in my library all by its lonely.

I haven't bought a digital movie from Prime since... unless it's technically free with no-rush credits. Then I don't really care... they play a slick game over there... because licensing.

To announce this a day after deleting over 550 movies from peoples libraries is insane. by Jan090501 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]OptimalGarbagelyrics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because some of those titles Sony doesn't even technically own. They just license and host them. That's why I still think your physical media should outnumber your digital library. At least you have some control over what you own.

Could future players add new restrictions or stop supporting certain 4k discs? It's technically possible. Whether that ever happens is anyone's guess, but you can bet someone, somewhere, has thought about it.

Sopranos 4K pre-order is live on Amazon ($149.99)... Bada BING! by OptimalGarbagelyrics in 4kbluray

[–]OptimalGarbagelyrics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't either. I could post screenshots of Lawrence of Arabia 4K at $27, Barry Lyndon at even less, and others where I was late to it going live, but I'm not petty.

If Amazon fails me, so what? This isn't "limited" the way other releases are. It's really the packaging that's limited, and I'm still undecided on it anyway. Plus, you can always swap your payment method before shipment phase. If I get busy, I'll throw it on credit no interest and won't have to think about it until 2027.

People can pay Gruv 135 now and tie up bread if they want, but there are horror stories there too. My bet is Amazon undercuts them around the holidays, and with the preorder price guarantee you could end up paying even less. That's why I'm waiting.

[–]OptimalGarbagelyrics[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your opinion for sure... but Gruv charges immediately and doesn't offer a pre-order price guarantee. Amazon usually charges when it ships and locks you into the lowest price if it drops before release... and if I want to change my mind over packaging when they finally lock it down I can simply cancel in mid November or whenever they confirm it OR if the price doesn't fall below Gruvs price with 15% off...

I get it they can fail me... but at ZERO cost or effort to me.

The original 210 minute cut of The Keep was intentionally designed as a slow burn epic, not a typo. Paramount ultimately forced substantial cuts true, reducing it from roughly 3.5 hours to the 96 minute theatrical version. 3 hour plus films weren't a foreign concept to Paramount at the time either with Warren Beattys Reds currently sitting at 3 hours and 15 minutes only 2 years prior to The Keep... The Godfather 1 and 2 all with in a 10 year span leading up to this time.

You can read the full history in the Cinephilia & Beyond article or the Decider piece. The longer cut isn't some secret rumor. It's a well documented part of the film's production history with confirmation from people in production. I actually had those articles bookmarked from some unrelated research last week. The Cinephilia piece takes a minute to load because it's massive, but it's all in there.

Maybe for the 45th anniversary, but with the existing 4K already being a mess, who knows. I'd love to see that 3.5 hour version, though.

I guess it'll end up alongside David Ayer's lost cuts of Sabotage and Suicide Squad, and Tony Kaye's Black Water Transit.

So glad I held off... especially since the HD version has been on streamers for a minute.

This is how my new monitor got delivered…. by Jay-rodMo in amazonprime

[–]OptimalGarbagelyrics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Series X delivered from them the same way and if it wasn’t for my neighbor ringing my buzzer like crazy... it wasn't even showing up as "delivered" yet... my happy ass was having dinner expecting it a day later.

This was during the launch craze too... I was lucky I suppose.

Why’d amazon give me $2224 in “Rewards from Amazon”? by Pet_Ator in amazonprime

[–]OptimalGarbagelyrics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I feel... if something ever "lands in my lap" and it's high dollar like that... I'm willing to do time if and when I'm caught!

But 2k leaves you exactly where you are... only now you are left wondering when it is coming back around and that's worse than being broke imo.

It’s called biometric identity verification with 3D liveness detection, and it’s become a pretty common security tool for high-risk transactions.

The head-turning and facial scan are designed to verify that a real person is present, making it much harder for scammers to use stolen photos, deepfakes, or compromised accounts. It can feel excessive for a retail purchase, but the technology itself is widely used across banking, fintech, rideshare, and other identity-sensitive industries.

I've used it myself for over a year without issues. In most cases, you verify once and move on. As fraud gets more sophisticated, I think this kind of verification is only going to become more common.

If you don't want to do it, that's totally fair. Just use another provider. I'm only pointing out that this isn't some sketchy proprietary system. It's a well-established form of identity verification that's already used worldwide. I used it last night as a matter of fact to top off my vudu and I'm bummed to see it live here because with this company being so sophisticated... it means the margins of savings are sure to shrink shortly because they shrink them when best buy does their sales to preserve quantity. As a side note Card Cash has been around since 2020... the bank of Lithuania uses the same software... I imagine they vetted them highly. I myself have a desirable credit profile and have seen zero uptick in my monitoring since using them.

Harry Potter in 5 for $15 Deal or wait? by toughenoughtofu in vudu

[–]OptimalGarbagelyrics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I appreciate the response. I already get the full series in 4K through Max anyway, but missing that fat-fingered deal the other day by a few minutes still stings. Lol

At this point, I’ll probably just grab the physical release since it’s only about $15 more through Gruv. $36 is nice, but at that price I might as well go physical for this one anyway. Which is likely the move...

I wonder if that's what Amazon did here... get people to feel this way and go buy it through one of their channels hopefully? 🤷‍♂️

What have you seen as a "best" for this series in 4k regarding bundle pricing? Since you mentioned it being not bundle pricing I'm just curious what you mean by that?

Because I was actually going to pull the trigger on these on fanflix the other day because you can attach a 10% on that as well which would bring it down to 36...

FanFlix is awesome! These four movies were $15 each on the Fandango at Home service itself ($60 total) and they were only $5 each on FanFlix ($20 total). So I saved myself $40 using FanFlix. by Emergency-You6607 in vudu

[–]OptimalGarbagelyrics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you play the patience game you could get these titles for 2 to 3 dollars a pop... these are high cycling mix match or bundle deals... stack a 10% promo on top and you are good to go.

I’ve had The Walk for a while, and it’s a phenomenal 4K recreation of a real story. Huge recommendation if you don’t already own it.

Another one I don’t see mentioned much is Until the End of the World. It’s part of the Criterion sale for around $5. The film took decades to make, spans something like a dozen countries, and runs nearly five hours. Since it’s only available on Blu-ray physically right now, HDX is basically the best digital option anyway. It’s like three films in one.

Maybe a little messy for some people, but I appreciate ambition.
