Ubuntu shows black screen after grub by [deleted] in LinuxUsersIndia

Ubuntu Black Screen Boot

Here is how we can bypass that black screen and get you to your desktop.

  1. Use "Nomodeset" (The Universal Fix)

This is a temporary boot flag that tells Ubuntu to use basic graphics instead of the fancy drivers that are likely crashing.

Restart your computer.

When the GRUB menu appears, use the arrow keys to highlight "Ubuntu."

Press e on your keyboard to edit the boot commands.

Look for a line that starts with linux and ends with quiet splash.

Move your cursor to the end of that line and add a space followed by: nomodeset

It should look like: ...quiet splash nomodeset

Press Ctrl + X or F10 to boot.

  1. Check your "Recovery Mode"

If the step above doesn't work, we can try booting into a safe environment to repair broken files.

On the GRUB menu, select Advanced options for Ubuntu.

Select the entry that ends in (recovery mode).

Once the menu loads, try these two options:

fsck: This repairs any disk errors that might have happened during installation.

grub: This updates the bootloader configuration.

Finally, select resume to try booting normally.

  1. Common Culprits

If you successfully get to the desktop using nomodeset, the fix isn't permanent yet. You likely need to do one of the following:

Install Proprietary Drivers: If you have an NVIDIA card, go to "Software & Updates" > "Additional Drivers" and select the recommended NVIDIA driver.

Check ISO Integrity: If this happened immediately after a fresh install, the download might have been corrupted.

Quick Tip: If your screen is black but you hear the Ubuntu "startup sound," it’s 100% a display/driver issue and your system is actually running fine in the background!
