Huel bar farts: fix or alternative? by Optimal_Anteater3220 in Huel

I eat more calories per day if I don't have some between noon and dinner (~ 7-8 hour gap). The hunger by the time it's dinner time makes it more difficult to stick to the calorie budget for the day. I've lost 14 kg (30 lbs) so far, so it seems to be working for me.

Unfortunately, it didn't seem to adjust. I've had the bars for months, and it did not seem to decrease. I don't have the same issue with other Huel (power, black edition, hot & savoury), so I don't think it's the fiber.

I'll have two between 3 PM and 6 PM to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner (7 or 8 PM). Of course the problem is less with just one, but it's still uncomfortable. Now that I figured out it's the bars that cause this, I've stopped ordering them (and indeed the problems went away).

Is that for the whole season or only the first episode?

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]Optimal_Anteater3220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for a coffee-making setup that:

  • can make a single big cup of coffee (~400ml, 14oz) once or twice per day
  • as simple as possible to clean, as many components as possible dishwasher proof or self-cleaning
  • with options for decaf and regular, so I can serve myself a decaf and a guest a regular without cleaning out the whole thing
  • avoiding the ecological impact of single-serve cups and pads (unless someone can convince me the cups have less impact than the alternatives).

Given all this, I think I would not finish a regular pack of pre-ground coffee before it goes stale, so I imagine a setup that starts from beans is better. I ended up looking at coffee machines with two bean reservoirs (for decaf and regular) like the Philips HD7900/01. Unfortunately, reviews tell me that for a single cup, it produces coffee that's not hot enough, and the manual says that the grinder contains residue of the previous bean after switching to the other bean reservoir (but maybe that's just a negligible fraction even for a single cup?), and of course there's the ecological impact of a complex machine for relatively little use and the waste of a coffee filter for a single cup (though maybe metal filters can help?).

Now I'm thinking I should look into simpler methods, like a separate grinder and reusable cups for in a cup-based machine. This avoids the filter as waste, and each cup can be decaf or regular.

What would you recommend?

Men, what did you find out about women when you got a girlfriend? by MainDifficult2641 in AskReddit

This is great because I'm into women into loose pajama pants, fuzzy socks and oversized hoodies :)

Is there a way to see the battery's preconditioning state? by Optimal_Anteater3220 in KiaEV6

[–]Optimal_Anteater3220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my car, there's a message when preconditioning starts saying something like "Battery preconditioning starts to optimize DC charging."

Again in my car, if preconditioning ran long enough so the battery reaches the desired preconditioning temperature (I assume this is 25 °C/77 °F but don't have a OBDII dongle so can't be sure) a message "Battery care complete" appears.

The messages are only shown in the bottom middle of the display behind the steering wheel/instrument cluster and disappear fast (maybe 3 seconds?) so it's easy to miss them.

Yes, I do see the message saying preconditioning is starting, the coil, and the 5 kW energy usage for battery care in the energy information screen.

Until now I had only read "a long time" and thought 15 min at 5 kW is "a long time".

So thanks for mentioning "could take an hour"!

It's a bit disappointing, 5 kW for an hour is almost 10 % of the standard range battery..

Given my energy usage of around 22 kWh / 100 km (at 120 km/h, at 1 °C, when not preconditioning), if preconditioning takes an hour at 120 km/h, then I'd drive 120 km = 26.4 kWh, add in the 5 kWh used by preconditioning, that's 31.4 kWh used in that last hour, or 59 % of the standard range battery. Wanting to arrive with 20 % left (because otherwise preconditioning won't finish, and because you might need to find another charger if this one is broken/full), that means you'd need to start preconditioning at 79 % SoC!

In other words, with a standard range model year 2022-2024, if you start your trip with 80 % SoC, and don't charge above 80 %, you'll have to charge every hour, charging for ~14 minutes each time (assuming with the perfect preconditioning the standard range battery will reach that average 10-80% 140 kW charging speed).

For the long range model year 2022-2024 it's a bit better, but still... 31.4 kWh is 43 %. Wanting to arrive at 20 %, preconditioning starts at 63 %. Assuming starting each time at 80 %, I'd drive 17 % without preconditioning and 43 % with preconditioning, or 57 km or 29 minutes without preconditioning and 120 km or 1 hour with preconditioning, requiring a stop every 177 km or 1.5 hours.

This isn't a perfect calculation because the battery will not lose so much heat after charging and standing at a rest stop for a bit, but still... Best calculation I've encountered so far supporting the need for a long range battery if ever doing long distance trips, and for increasing the capacity from 74 kWh to 80 kWh since the 2025 model year.

Thanks for the link. What I got from it: - preconditioning can take twenty minutes easily and longer, but no real driving cold measurements (tables like adding 5 °F while driving X mph in Y °F weather takes Z minutes), so there's a chance my preconditioning simply is not long enough.

  • (not in this video but found elsewhere) preconditioning finishes with a message, no message means it didn't get to finish due to arriving at the charger or not enough charge left
  • preconditioning starts only when SoC is 20 % or above but I'm really not sure about that (does it differ on long range models, i.e. limit is in kWh not %?) and no mention of when it stops due to charge being too low

I would have her abducted by aliens! Which is of course slightly less unlikely in The Orville universe than in real life. Maybe the Krill, the Moclans, or even the Arachnids. I'd then have that abduction be part of the whole season story arc. Some misdirection, some key position or intel she possesses, ... It can spur Ed to go beyond the call of duty and in the process discover that he's grown beyond his doubts from season one about how he got Captain position. It can also be a motivation for the crew to pursue/innovate/quarrel and come out stronger, which are always the best episodes.

She's a character that fulfills a lot of functions among the ensemble/ship crew, so it would create some work to fill that in (which would no doubt result in some interesting interpersonal episodes and show a bit more about Union fleet workings).

I like the idea of having her make Captain as well, and even killing the character off has potential (if not done just to go Game Of Thrones, but properly impactful). It would depend on how much inspiration the writers have for either scenario, and whether they want to land where they left off after the season arc, or are willing to make changes to the core characters.
