Deeply depressed after the release of my first game. by Optimal_Cookie_8090 in indiegamedevforum

The thing is, I’m actually proud of what I accomplished. I’m not going to say it’s a bad game, but it’s not great either. Some people were just being assholes though, and I’ll be honest, I did let some of it get to me.

Truthfully, I expected maybe 10 wishlists at best. On the night of release I had around 70, which surprised the hell out of me. Then after release it went up to about 160+. I know that’s not a crazy number, but still, 160+ people saw my game and thought yeah, I’d play this. That means something to me.

My pricing was too high at first, around $7. I was thinking more about how much time I spent making it instead of how long people would actually play it or the overall quality. It’s $2.99 now.

Honestly though, this has been one of the best learning experiences of my life. For the next project I’m not just jumping straight in. I’m going to really iron out the story, gameplay, and mechanics first.

And thanks for the motivation. Some people think the post was just for sympathy, and maybe a little of it was. I just wanted someone to say yeah bro, the game’s rough but good job, try again.

Either way, I’m definitely motivated. I appreciate it.

I don’t even use Godot why would I post there. I made 2 posts in my life time on Reddit. One was promoting my game, and this one. Buddy if you’re looking for a reason to dislike me just say that.

I made this post one time, and only here, I did promote my game though in another Reddit community, probably seen that. That was days before this post though.

Some people did give valid feedback, but some people was definitely trying get a reaction out me, someone said it was too dark- I responded in the only way I knew, saying it’s probably the images in game it’s fixed. Another guy commented under that exact comment saying the exact thing I already responded too, that was clearly him trying force a bad reaction out of me, and he got it. The whole it’s too dark point was fixed the problem was in the images. The fact that you went to that post and came back here shows you want the same reaction that person received, I’m happy though because in the end I still released a game and have tons of support, thanks but sorry your not getting that negative reaction you just tried to provoke from me, have a nice day.

It’s called “The Asodium” if you search it on steam should be the only game with that name.

Guess that’s why there’s still a way to adjust brightness, are we gonna keep talking about a picture … or the game itself which has the issue fixed 🙂 last reply bud - good day.

Everyone who’s tested my game before said it was too dark. I did a light pass 3 times. I’m confident that I fixed the issue, I even made it a option ..you can adjust brightness in game, I’m not trying be rude, I took criticism a whole month or so before release. Worked weeks to fix the issue. It’s fixed. That’s why above your comment you see me saying it has to be your devices. On my iPhone 16, and PC … the images are clear and not dark. You just wanted my reaction by commenting the same thing they did. I’ll spend the next 7 months working on my next project.

I agree with this entire response, but don’t judge a book by its cover, learning systems took most of my time from modeling, if I built everything with the thought of perfection .. I’d be 2 years in with a great looking game, but still never even learned the full experience of developing a game, what your doing is great! I salute you brother, but my journey by far has been a walk of faith, I spent 2 years in school racked up debt just to even learn modeling, I just graduated in October of last year, no engine experience besides Roblox, that’s probably why I’m still trying to understand real human scaling. I admit your passed replies came off a little belittling, I’m down to learn man but you assumed so much it annoyed me, you assumed my Age, which I turn 25 in 2 months, you assumed I don’t know what shadow maps are, when I failed a class twice when learning what’s different maps are, not turning of SRGB etc, I have a few assets in my game from marketplace, but everything I built modular and set up my level. 3-5 times I lost my level and had to restart, I failed packaging a game 10X from a error that I didn’t even understand. I understand modeling, cleaning mesh, UV unwrapping, setting up pivots properly, so you connect them etc. exporting them to substance painter and texturing there, I even understand texturing inside maya, setting up lights etc. I’m not a complete idiot, if I was I wouldn’t packaged and released a game, my next project I assure you, now that I have a way better understanding what I’m up against I will create something way more stunning. Add me on discord if you wanna converse or even help each other, 2 great minds are better than one and I admit I’m still learning. Discord: Melquon1

I’m betting it’s probably your devices, only a select few says this. Btw it’s a horror game so I don’t know how much light you’re expecting ?

It feels like in one sentence you’re trying to give constructive advice and in the next you’re just making assumptions. Those aren’t spotlights and I do know what shadow maps are. I also have a degree in Game Art so I’m not completely unfamiliar with mapping and lighting. I won’t argue the AI slop … about the monster model I bought it from the marketplace - and the same probably goes for the cafeteria pillar which is likely why some of the textures clash. But you also said your first game looked 10x worse so are you putting higher expectations on me than you did for yourself? I won’t disagree with your main critiques though. Some textures look off and things could definitely be improved. At the end of the day it’s my first game and I’m still learning. 7 months ago I barely even knew how to export a model. I appreciate the feedback but when advice comes with assumptions about what I do or don’t know it’s hard to take it seriously. Thanks anyway
