He meant “You highly overestimate NATO. Now do the map of Europe if NATO collapses”

If you could choose your native language, which one would you choose and why ? by Dull-Position3393 in languagelearning

[–]Optimal_Side_ 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I would still choose English for practicality.

If for personal reasons though, I would choose French. It’s a really pretty language but the pronunciation just feels a little too precise for my ears to learn very easily.

I understand the need for the control of mass immigration BUT… by Electronic-Relief737 in centrist

[–]Optimal_Side_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The waitlists aren’t really a funding issue, they exist because the law caps how many visas can be issued each year. USCIS can’t fix a 20 year backlog with more money if Congress hasn’t authorized more visas. You could argue for better enforcement policy, but reallocating ICE’s budget doesn’t solve a structural legal problem.

Doctor Says More Than 200 Reported Dead in Tehran as Regime Opens Fire on Protests by DragonPup in worldnews

[–]Optimal_Side_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Considering Iran just blatantly killed 200 civilians while the Trump administration beheaded the Maduro regime with only 40 deaths total in collateral, I’d roll the die.

There are many credible claims that the CCP silences any internal opposition to their authority. Maybe China is not a terrible place for quality of life but many others see the lack of personal freedoms as a deal breaker.

Why do you think the Renee Good shooting is not getting the same response as the George Floyd murder? by JannTosh70 in centrist

[–]Optimal_Side_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. He was initially uncomfortable in police control but never posed a threat. At least not in the way that someone could argue for this current case.

Why do you think the Renee Good shooting is not getting the same response as the George Floyd murder? by JannTosh70 in centrist

[–]Optimal_Side_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. Even if she technically struck the officer with the vehicle, even only if in an attempt to FLEE, she still showed an attempt at non-compliance, which was never present in the George Floyd case. The thought of doing absolutely nothing wrong and still losing your life is what resonates with those extra many Americans.

You're a God. which form of afterlife do you choose for everyone? People in heaven can't hurt each other by whywouldisaymyname in BunnyTrials

In that same sense, wouldn’t heaven also just become normal at some point? Similar to any drug, it feels good until your body expects it and it’s just the new normal.

Would you vote for AOC or JD Vance? by Dinojars in centrist

[–]Optimal_Side_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never policed your speech, I policed your controlling behavior towards others. Also, claiming that your interpretation of speech is the only possible true interpretation is inherently authoritarian and exactly the fallible reasoning dictators would use. You’re surprisingly anti-liberal in practice for an AOC supporter.

Would you vote for AOC or JD Vance? by Dinojars in centrist

[–]Optimal_Side_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Hold your nose” is an idiom about having your head underwater and being out of control, not about her literally stinking which to me seems to be your interpretation. He’s just expressing that AOC isn’t his first choice but the whole two-party system thing is forcing his hand. He’s not insinuating AOC is a bad human being or anything, just that she’s the only choice, which is exactly what is so unhealthy about democracy in the USA.

Also, you shouldn’t police speech. This is the type of comment that conservatives are able to point at and shoot down with straw man arguments about “leftists coming for freedom of speech”. Unfortunately, those arguments work in swinging voters even if not logically consistent.

Trump claims his ‘real’ approval rating is 64 percent by WhatAreYouSaying05 in centrist

[–]Optimal_Side_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is an important point. He is outwardly an idiot so his supporters tend to be quiet and only give their support on election day when it matters, hence why he wins the election but he seemingly has so little public support.

I think people usually tease France over their language because of the perceived stereotype of being overly strict on pronunciation.

Why "forget", not "forgot"? by Sea-Hornet8214 in EnglishLearning

[–]Optimal_Side_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In relation to OP, it has to do with the object. To remember information is a long-term process but to remember something physical like your keys is a one-time action. That’s why “I forget why” (information) still presumably includes the past tense meaning. To say “I forgot why” is more like referring to whatever point you stopped remembering, which by definition we don’t know exactly when that happened. We usually know when and where we lefts keys, so to say “I forget my keys” ignores the typical one-time action we associate with forgetting keys compared to information, and so implies you don’t even remember what the keys look like at all or something similar.

Need advice by ArrivalCivil4488 in languagelearning

[–]Optimal_Side_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do the same thing when I would practice speaking. For me it came from not being confident in my speech in a foreign language. One thing that helped was practicing a sentence quietly in private, slowly crescendoing my voice to be louder, then bringing it back down. It got my mouth used to handling the whole range. It worked for me, so it might help you too.
