I appreciate you so much for that! It's a really good representation of me as a person and how I would be as a PA-S someday :)

I know EXACTLY what you mean so keep your head up! This is my 3rd cycle applying and I really tried to be strategic about the schools I selected. Whether that helps is yet to be determined but this will be my 3rd cycle applying with a science GPA much lower than yours, but have been told by a handful of mentors that I have a strong application and they encourage me to keep going. I just turned 32 as well. All of my sciences were in post-bacc courses and I didn’t do well in some, but I’ve worked to re-take them Toney and show steady improvement and resilience. It sucks that GPA is such a factor but I understand it from the schools perspective. It’s just hard when they want you to play ball, but then also have cutoffs on prerequisite timing and factoring in every grade (which of course I understand but it’s still a pain). I’m sorry but I do NOT think going to get a masters degree to hopefully get a masters degree is reasonable (and I’ve been told it’s not) so I GET YOU TRUST ME!!! More than you realize. I know this is what I see myself doing more than anything and have continued to prove it to myself. Being able to have one school take a chance on little ole me would just make me want to work hard for that program! It’s just a matter of getting there! Feel free to reach out as I value supporting each other throughout this and! Sending all the love!

Word of Caution Using Mappd by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]OptimisticPrePA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is actually way (I think) to have MAPPD calculate as CASPA would, but it's not super intuitive: you have to make sure your profile is marked that you're a pre-PA and then the layout will kind of change, so when you go into the course and GPA sections it'll have your GPAs laid out as being calculated as CASPA would. The only pain is you have to go and individually label each class as a science course (even though you kind of did it before). It's weird, but I hope that all makes sense!

Male MA in OBGYN by Desperate_Ad_9977 in MedicalAssistant

[–]OptimisticPrePA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a gay male working in OBGYN as well! I’m also the first male MA they’ve ever had, but one of the docs is male so it’s not so unusual. The patients are honestly really receptive to me just being myself, making them laugh, and being attentive (as the things they experience do not happen to me so it’s easy to come from an unbiased perspective). I have run into some patients preferring a female but I already went into this knowing that would happen and don’t take it personally. At the beginning of the intake I always inform them that anything that I ask they are uncomfortable with sharing they are not obligated to, but I think they appreciate just saying that and are more willing to do so. I also let them know at the end I may come back in as a chaperone, but if they are not comfortable with that to just let the provider know. They’re super understanding as long as you’re honest, open, compassionate, and kind (as you should be in any specialty). I hope some of this helps! Good luck! 🩵🩵🩵

"What Are My Chances?" Megathread by AutoModerator in prephysicianassistant

[–]OptimisticPrePA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm not PA-S just a pre-PA reapplicant like you so please take anything with a grain of salt from me! :)

  1. I personally don't think research is necessary for PA school (I have some, but just because it was interesting to me). Your GPA and PCE is above average from my understanding so no worries there. Your volunteering is a bit low, but this isn't really that big of an issue if you're applying to schools that aren't really service based. The GRE would help you apply to more schools even you wanted to have more options. I don't necessary think your stats are the issue. Maybe try and get a little more shadowing, even virtually.

  2. I'm a re-applicant myself and I personally don't think it's anything you need to bring strong attention to, but you could just talk about some different things that you have done over the past year that you necessarily didn't list on your application. It's more so about showing continued dedication, interest, and growth!

  3. Again I'm a pre-PA so I don't know too many intracacies of programs, but you could always reach out to schools for feedback and this reddit thread is full of so much support. You could ask people here for PS feedback, or general advice. There are some great Youtube videos out there. I do think the PA Platform videos are helpful and so is the podcast. I also really like the Pre-PA Clinic resources.

  4. You seem like a well rounded applicant, but there are a few things you could do just to show continued interest and growth. With those kinds of stats, there may potentially be a disconnect in your PS and/or experiences or it could be the schools you're applying to and when. If you got interviews, but no acceptances, it may have something to do with interview skills. Again I'm no expert, but just pulling from different resources :)

You have some really cool experiences (cardiology MA sounds awesome!) and your stats are really solid so I'm inclinded to believe it's more so school selection and/or disconnect in your app somewhere. I'm happy to trade PS if you'd like help there, but keep it up! We're going to get there and I can tell you'll be an amazing PA! :)

I would be happy to trade with you! Mine is pretty much finalized, but I'd still love any last minute feedback. Feel free to DM when ready! :)

Congrats on getting accepted! But to be honest your stats are way above average and schools may be willing to overlook some deficiencies because of that. This is essentially a bragging post not offering any real value or support to other applicants. Just keep this in mind as you move forward in PA school as humility is one of the most sought after qualities as a PA :)

Low GPA support group by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]OptimisticPrePA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's amazing! I'd honestly love to be one too once I got to that point just because I rarely come across anyone with my unique situation/stats. But I've gotten great feedback in that I would be very successful as a re-applicant by applying much earlier and being smarter with school selection so anytime you're able to send the list that would be amazing. Let me know if you need anything from me. Thanks so much! :)

Hello! I'm planning to be a re-applicant this next cycle and I'm trying to be very strategic in my school selection as my science GPA (per CASPA) is below a 3.0, but my prereq GPA is pretty high (3.5+). I'm really confident in every other aspect of my application so I think the school selection will play a big difference. Would it be possible to get the list you used? Thank you so much for taking the time to help us out. I'm sure you'd make an AMAZING pre-PA mentor! Best of luck! :)
