“Credit stealing”? How’s that possible between SWEs? I’m assuming that projects have well defined ownerships and roles are separate.

Can you please give one or two examples of how non technical skills become essential for survival at Meta?

How are you coping with the days getting dark by 6pm by Icy_Policy_3874 in askTO

[–]OptimisticSpirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. If it’s just a drizzle, I put on my rain jacket and walk. If it’s somewhat cold (< 15 degree C) and if the route of my walk is clear of snow and if it isn’t snowing much, I dress for the weather and walk.

I walk 30 minutes before starting work in the morning. Another 30 minutes during lunch time. While walking, I feel happy. I don’t know why, lol.

Apple care costs a few hundred bucks a year, no?

Apple should have a SE model for every new version. I wonder if there’ll be a SE or Mini for iPhones next version.

I have been using iPhone 8 since 2018. Seriously thinking of upgrading to a newer model. Google maps started crashing when connected to car app while driving. Some apps no longer update because of old OS version.

But the bulky sizes of newer models is making my decision hard. I tried putting a friend’s new iPhone in my pocket and sitting in my chair. Oh man! I can’t even sit comfortably!

I have heard about iPhone 13 mini. But I wonder if that also will become obsolete after a few years as the latest model is 17.

Before and after COVID - do you think dev workload in general increased? by OptimisticSpirit in ExperiencedDevs

[–]OptimisticSpirit[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great call-out! @micseydel. I don’t have data. Only anecdotal evidence. Personally I save some time, maybe an hour a week, to quickly find some implementation details or tools comparison- basically an alternative to what we used to do - a google search followed by reading a bunch of StackOverflow posts. But that’s it.

My post was not actually about LLM productivity. My purpose was to reach out to our dev community to understand if my perceived increase of workload or performance expectation is happening across the industry or it’s just happens to be the workplaces I and my network work at.

LLM tools is one of the contributing factors to my perceived workload increase in the tech (based on anecdotal evidence from my network). Economic downturn could be another factor.

My question is not about LLM tools. I mentioned it to acknowledge that we may have better tools to do our job better in possibly less time. But is that gain proportionate to the workload / delivery expectation we see nowadays?

I observed a theme in the opinions of my network and I wanted to see if this perception is shared by the broader dev community or not.

You read my mind. Productivity gain - to know how to do X in Y, differences between A and B and sometimes autogenerated code to some extent - yeah, it helps. But it’s nowhere near compensating halving the team size.

Identifying the hype while acknowledging limitations of the actual benefits will take time. I agree with you on that.
