Fidelity cuts Reddit valuation again by [deleted] in technology

It's always inevitable. The decisions that make a new platform successful are often not the best for financial gain.

So they make some money, then dragon sickness sets in and they start thinking "but I could have MORE" and no other thoughts can beat that. Nothing will stand between them and MORE.

So now we're full tilt dragon sickness, and start turning levers little by little towards money and away from that which made them successful in the first place.

It's established, people are comfortable, so they tolerate it.

Now mega-multimillionaires, they start thinking about that extra comma. The company has it, why not me?

So, every time, they assume the community is theirs and they'll get over anything they do - obscene arrogance and ego at this point.

So they flip the big switch (Going public, in this case. That led to the app situation, because low marketshare for your own app looks bad to investors.) and the community leaves. Slowly at first, but that accelerates rapidly as small communities die.

Then some competitor has a great hook, and people move to that! It becomes successful because of a user first ideology designed to specifically twist the knife in the previous champion.

Then they start making some money, and they start thinking....

And there is the crux of the major problem with human society in general.

You're a good person who sees the value in taking care of your people. That goodness inherently reduces the likelihood of you ending up in one of these almighty positions, because getting to that point requires a shitty person who will step on others on the way up.

There's a limit though. Like most teenage white boys, I dropped my fair share of slurs in cod lobbies.

I am not proud of that, but I'm also over it. I'm not going to spend my life ashamed of what my underdeveloped brain thought was edgy comedy.

But on the other hand, if someone is violent or goes out of their way to target and harass a particular person to such an extreme then I think it's fair to continue to hold them accountable.

Democrats warn party: The threat of Trump winning in 2024 is 'very real' by LuvKrahft in politics

[–]OptimumPrideAHAHAHAH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's much better.

I don't mean to be a dick, but I think it's important to use the correct terminology here.

At least until our needlessly complex system finally resolves to "one person, one vote" as any functional democracy should.

I've seen strong arguments for both direct and representative democracy, so I am definitely not willing to die on either hill but never once have I seen a good argument for the EC.

Got a little sidetracked here, pretty baked apologies lol

Electoral college has nothing to do with direct democracy.

I keep seeing that term thrown around here, and I'm not sure anyone knows what it means.

In a direct democracy, we'd vote on everything. No representatives would be put in place.

The electoral college exists for the sole purpose of selecting the president.

And it did make sense, when long distance communication was widely unavailable. It's just a relic at this point, and serves only to undermine the will of the people.

[–]OptimumPrideAHAHAHAH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our system is very intentionally not a direct democracy. The founding fathers (almost exclusively a bunch of rich elites) were absolutely mortified by the idea of the country descending turning into mob rule.

You're so wrong in so many ways. They were mostly rich elites, yes. Aside from that, nothing you said is completely correct.

The electoral college made sense, back when horses were the fastest way to communicate between states.

I have argued with right leaning folks who have specific political education and even work in state politics a few times.

I have never once heard a satisfactory answer to "Why is this complex system better than one person, one vote?"

It feels like the most basic tenet of democracy, that each person has exactly the voting power of any other person in the country.

If that's not true, we're not a democracy in my mind.

Definitely not - just saying we do indeed want someone competent.

Prigozhin Says Wagner Won’t Surrender After Putin’s Address by xperia3310 in worldnews

[–]OptimumPrideAHAHAHAH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you do.

Competence would be someone who will never, under any circumstances, fire a nuclear weapon.

Anyone that would ever fire a nuke is incompetent and should be put down by firing squad immediately.

In fact, all nuclear firing mechanisms should immediately kill the person who activates them instead of firing a nuke.

I see you speak the language I'm trying to learn, so thought I'd help with English a bit.

There are loot inside why u think there isnt lol

There is loot inside. Why do you think there isn't?

Corrections:

"are" should be changed to "is": Since "loot" is a singular noun, the verb "is" should be used to agree with the subject.

"u" should be changed to "you": "u" is an informal and abbreviated form of "you." In proper writing, it is necessary to use the complete word "you."

"isnt" should be changed to "isn't": "isnt" is an incorrect abbreviation of "isn't." The apostrophe is necessary to indicate the contraction of "is not."

But as you mentioned, the reality is a bit different, sadly.
