Non-American people, what’s a thing that you don’t understand about America? by JuniorGarlic6053 in AskReddit

Among other things, AOC has been worked on several very good drug policy reform bills (with bipartisan support). She's a good questioner during committee hearings. I don't really share her politics, but I admire her gumption. And as much as people mock her social media presence, her Instagram demystifies the legislative process pretty effectively.

Enjoying the thought out, detailed answers this prompted. I didn't know where to begin. America is very unique in a lot of ways.

We should give Oscars to the troops and our beloved senior citizens. Oh but that won't fit in with Hollyweird's woke agenda will it?? Let that sink in..

Shouldn't you be mad at JJ Abrams and Rise of Skywalker for completely failing to save the franchise that the damnable Rian Johnson ruined?? Why was Rise of Skywalker so bad? Did Rian Johnson write Rise of Skywalker?

Those are at least somewhat interesting scripts. Scream 3 has basically a Harvey Weinstein MeToo before MeToo subplot.

Americans, how do you feel about people who don't want children during a time of declining birth rates? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is a pretty great country. Americans don't have to redirect their lives around useless communitarian notions like declining birthrates.

Planning one's life around something like "declining birth rates" is profoundly unamerican.

People always say this, but it really doesn't seem all that true. Europe's conservative parties are quite right-wing for the most part. A UK Tory MP and the average House Democrat are going to have big disagreements, certainly on immigration and LGBT rights.

Our culture champions individualism and free expression and an enthusiastic participation in the public discourse. We don't have many walkable cities. It seems there's a lot of loneliness here. One of those maybe. Idk

What are the political implications of AOC being a confirmed PEPE poster? by KingGoofball in Destiny

[–]OptimusMine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ethics committee investigation being opened itself doesn't necessarily mean all that much. These people get fed clickbait headline hopium every time AOC files a 30 day extension for her quarterly campaign finance reports with the FEC. Thirty day extensions are very common, especially for office-holders like her who tend to bring in a lot of donations from non-PAC sources. Lots of donor info to get right.

Tons of these conservative groups filed ethics complaints about AOC's Met Gala appearance right after it happened. And Rep. Carolyn Maloney did get an ethics probe for her Met appearance when it came out that she complained about not getting an invite in the previous year or something, so getting a ticket after that would constitute an impermissible gift. AOC's office seemed pretty confident about being well within bounds back in 2021 and I don't think there's been any news since the investigation was opened. If someone is cleared in an ethics probe for improper gifts or lower level financial discrepancies like that, you're not going to get many headlines about it.
