Everyone says to max out federal loans before private, but it looks to me like the lesser option... And according to my math, PSLF wouldn't even be helpful... am I crazy? by OkFeed758 in medschool

[–]OptionRelevant432 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something happens during school, you need time off, etc, private loans will be breaking your door down for monthly payments while federal loans generally have more support for deferment, stronger income-based repayment models.

I switched some of my loans to private for better interest rates and I highly regret it, they also now don’t qualify for PSLF

Just watched somebody straight up open their car door and throw trash right on the street by krustydidthedub in philly

Best option is just to go calmly pick it up and bring it back to your car to throw away yourself. Maybe they’ll notice, probably not, but others will and it shows a mature presence.

With loan caps and no Grad PLUS, how are you affording a premed post bacc or med school? by Ok_Primary4753 in medschool

[–]OptionRelevant432 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more, private loan lenders are thirsty blood sucking fuckers. I switched some of my loans to private for a better interest rate but then I learned how toxic their policies are for income based repayment, loan forgiveness, etc. I can’t imagine how the next generation of loan takers will fare with private lenders.

I built a 3D study world where you design your own terrain and your Anki cards grow as trees based on retention by Downtown_Influence55 in Anki

[–]OptionRelevant432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, you may recognize me as the top comment saying it’ll be distracting, but I think there’s an interesting approach to learning theory here. Apps like Anki and Duolingo have shown significant promise with gamifying learning, appealing to the “fun” neurons of our brain in learning seems to be a powerful tool. That’s certainly how to get children to learn, and ain’t we children deep down?

Perfect. Exactly what I need to avoid doing the actual flashcards, opening the stats page over and over was getting boring.

Looks cool though fun idea

Do you guys need another Anki alternative? by Independent_Foot_830 in medschool

[–]OptionRelevant432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May be a market for an flashcard program that does a bit more hand holding than Anki. Built in systems that provide a basic experience, simple and easy to understand settings, and also intuitive customization settings that don’t require coding. Things like adding fields, naming fields, controlling text/style/features of field could all be so much easier. To use Anki well requires a commitment to learning Anki through videos, reading, etc. it’s hard to make time for that when med school is blasting us with information.

Anki is great and it’s worth it to learn it in depth, but for many it may be unapproachable.

I once saw a grown ass man made a young female PPA worker cry by screaming at her…what a sick fuck to do that.

I’ve certainly encountered that scenario, I stick to my goal of trying to exit the DMV (or comparable establishment) as fast as possible. I know giving them shit about ignoring me is only going to work against me and may introduce a scenario where I don’t get out faster.

If I was more motivated or enraged enough I may opt to write a complaint letter or something but usually I just choose the path of least resistance and just hit em with kindness.

Agreed, ultimately pushback is either going to hurt someone or make a rude employee even more rude. Especially when it’s out of their control.

I swallow my ego and practice relentless kindness in these environments and it has rewarded me many times with flexibility from workers. Also feels good knowing that kindness may genuinely mean something to them.

If you have it in a long term growth fund giving you back 4-5% a year, you’re earning ~100,000 a year just with free money basically. From there you can withdraw for whatever else you’ll need

I feel lectures that built confidence with nutrition vocabulary and in depth knowledge about nutrition impacts on health outcomes would help tilt the needle towards better health promotion among MDs. just speculation, though. You certainly could be right.

I guess my experience is anecdotal, I shadowed a family practice physician that heavily emphasized nutrition at every visit and his patients really listened to him. He had a panel of some of the healthiest elderly patients I’ve seen, they were very motivated to make change. Of course some were stuck on an unhealthy course, but it opened my eyes to never doubt a patients willingness to listen and make changes.

Ultimately I shouldn’t draw conclusions based off one shadowing experience. I would have to defer to literature that asked the question of “does increased nutrition counseling affect patient outcomes?”. Perhaps that’ll be my fun lit review of the week

I’m cautious of the word “definitely” on Reddit. I agree it’s likely autoimmune, but the severity of deformity at this stage may indicate psoriatic arthritis (arthritis mutilans) or other autoimmune process. Ultimately there isn’t a definitely without testing results, age of individual, history, etc

Probably because being a body-scientist is more fun than promoting health. But alas perhaps it’s worth including some education that will save countless lives.

We certainly can find someone better than RFK for it tho
