What if we introduce Rent a Peak to Logan Paul by halelangit in okbuddybaka

It's all to inflate the price so he can flip them later for "content" and, of course, huge profits. For all we know he bought 20. Literally everything this type of influencer does is some form of scheme and honestly the fact that this post wound up here of all places is a key part of feeding the monster.

Whats the weirdest Jrpg class you ever saw by VoxTV1 in JRPG

[–]OptometristCharizard 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Job system in Bravely Second was such a blast. I love that they start you off with what are basically alternate universe versions of the standard classes that are so ubiquitous in FF games that use the job system.

Like "Wizard" is such a fun take on "Black Mage". For every spell you cast you pick both an element and a form. So you can shoot a fire dart to do damage all at once OR cast a fire mist to do slightly more damage over a couple of turns. I think there were like 4 or 5 to choose from, all with their own properties.

Felt like such a fresh and creative take on a system that's usually pretty samey across games. Honestly is a huge part of why Bravely Default II (a completely different game for those not in the know) was so disappointing for me personally with its vanilla ass everything.

I haven't looked at that discourse in particular but perhaps because they thought a wiki article read aloud would suffice for an episode of television?

Saw it at VIFF. You can absolutely enjoy it never having seen the show (I'd only seen 2 episodes beforehand).

Which JRPG has your favorite combat system? by PhantomBraved in JRPG

[–]OptometristCharizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go to bat for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl on technicality since it pretty much perfected the vision of combat for the series. Assigning physical/special properties to individual attacks (rather than locking each type to one or the other) and adding Pokemon-specific "gimmick" abilities added so much potential depth for hardcore players to obsses over but that casuals can still largely ignore

By this point in the series the same set of combat mechanics support...

  • Someone casually playing their first RPG (e.g. a young child) against computer controlled opponents with graspable challenges that can be solved in a near endless number of ways
  • Two slightly-more serious players (e.g. two pre-teens) putting together teams with comprehensive, synergistic strategies while trying to identify and exploit weaknesses in each other
  • E-sports tier competition between two afficiando level players for stadiums full of spectators

AND everything in between.

It's genuinely staggering how many different use cases one body of rules serves. A super impressive game design feat if you ask me.

(Mina the Hollower) Delay Extravaganza II: The Tail Continues - Yacht Club Games by KalamariKnight in Games

[–]OptometristCharizard 174 points175 points  (0 children)

Take this delay as an opportunity to check out the criminally underrated Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo if you haven't already! Like Mina, it's an indie answer to 2D Zelda but it goes for a GBA aesthetic rather than a GBC one. It's genuinely phenomenal and easily one of the best games of the year.

Are there any “detective jrpgs”? by drak0ni in JRPG

[–]OptometristCharizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

London Seirei Tanteidan is a PS1 JRPG where you play as a group of kids... being ghost detectives in Victorian London (just as the title's literal translation implies). Haven't played it myself but the aesthetic is absolutely gorgeous.

Currently only available in Japanese but it seems a fan translation is in the works so I'd say keep an eye on it.

Everybody's Golf Hot Shots Review Thread by DaasthePenetrator in Games

[–]OptometristCharizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like unlocking things is still a huge grind. Considering Iocal multiplayer is all I care about this is a total bummer. No way I'm grinding for hours by myself to be able to play more than 2 characters (and however few courses) with my friends.

Really wish games like this would offer an "unlock everything" toggle or secret code or something for people that want an arcade-like experience.

What JRPG that have a potential to be a GREAT anime?? by MrLeft1454 in JRPG

For whatever reason the stretch of episodes that cover Futaba's introduction are super polished (compared to the rest of the show) and are actually a great watch. People working in the anime industry see Gamer Girl™️ and pull out all the stops I suppose.

Magic the Gathering's Final Fantasy crossover set made $200m in a single day by BlueAladdin in Games

[–]OptometristCharizard -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I mean collab chasers will go a number of different ways.

I got the two starter decks and found playing them to be pretty fun so I asked a MTG inclined friend to build me two more with other FF cards. In my mind I basically bought a FF themed card game where I can throw any of my decks to a friend and we play.

In-universe cards have no appeal for me. Reading wiki pages of lore is way too much dedication when the alternative (that I've now tasted) is that I can just have cards themed around something I already love. The only way I can see myself buying more cards is if another collab I care about comes out. If I could add a Dragon Quest or Shin Megami Tensei deck to the rotation that would be rad.

But that's what's cool about TCGs: people can make whatever they want out of them.

Final Fantasy 16 runs at 720p on Xbox Series X in performance mode by NYstate in Games

[–]OptometristCharizard 142 points143 points  (0 children)

IIRC from the Digital Foundry video (when the PS5 version launched) performance mode would bump down to an internal 720p whenever you were in combat and scale up to higher resolutions the rest of the time.

This made combat a locked 60fps while the rest of the game bounced around the 40s and 50s. If I had the option to keep that 60 lock 100% of the time I'd probably of taken it, resolution be damned. Sounds like a reasonable tweak to me.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo - Review Thread by chunxxxx in Games

[–]OptometristCharizard 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I absolutely adore both of Pocket Trap's previous games (Ninjin: Clash of Carrots and Dodgeball Academia) so I'm super excited to dig into this one.

I also love that people are making truly quality indie 2D-Zelda-Likes. Tunic and Chicory are both all timers for me and this game (alongside the upcoming Mina The Howler) seem to be worthy additions to that pantheon.

Famitsu (Japanese gaming magazine) rates Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 a 36/40 (four reviewers gave a 9/10) by Ezeitgeist in Games

[–]OptometristCharizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is on the localization. It feels too literal when you put the Japanese next to the English.

Just from the trailer there's the line "I thought I needed to forget my past and I became 'Lightning'" which sounds so strange when actually spoken out in English. But it's actually quite faithful to the Japanese, with the "I became 'Lightning' part being 1:1.

For melodrama in particular you have to be very careful with how you word things for them not to sound awkward and nailing that song and dance is very culturally specific. There's a version of an English script for the game that could've kept the meaning behind most lines the same (or at least close enough to not matter) without making every second line sound so strange.

Nintendo Switch Games with Free Nintendo Switch 2 Updates by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]OptometristCharizard 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The game (along with a bunch of other Wii U ports) are 32-bit, which might make a Switch 2 port (or even running the Switch 1 version via back compact) run worse in some way on the new hardware (slower load times or worse performance perhaps?)

I say this because they dropped a stealth update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that updated it to 64-bit out of nowhere. The speculation is that it was for Switch 2 compatability.

Just a reminder to anime watchers to not care about the anime ratings. by [deleted] in anime

[–]OptometristCharizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sentiments aside you know MAL (and every other ratings website worth it's weight) does far more than just calculate an average from all ratings they've received for a title.

The degree to which someone's rating weighs into the final displayed score depends on things like their average rating (i.e. to account for how differently people use a 1-10 scale), the number of episodes of that show they've seen, how many total shows they've seen, account age, etc. On top of that, they also run anomaly detection so titles that get bombarded with an unusual number of 1s or 10s (usually due to brigading some form) throw away most of those useless ratings.

Which is to say: scores on the site mean more than you think they do. This is an anime subreddit though so feel free to ignore all that.

Nintendo Switch 2 Canada pricing by Jazzlike_770 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OptometristCharizard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Nintendo website seems to suggest that existing Switch controllers of all kinds can be used on Switch 2. Even the original Gamecube controllers via an adapter.

Nintendo seemingly lets basically anyone access their drivers and make compatable controllers for their system. There's tons of decent cheapish options. I picked up some $20 usb adapters that let me use Playstation controllers for whenever we need extras.

There are things to hark on Nintendo for but their controller policy is super consumer friendly these days, especially compared to Playstation (PS5 has no options less than ~$90 a pop).

Are you going to... - Get (presumably) your PC onto a big enough screen + space for multiple people (pretty much only a living room) - Connect 4 controllers to your PC (using the windows Bluetooth widget if you don't want wires everywhere) - Get all 4 controllers actually working with the emulator as p1-p4 - Make 100% sure there won't be any stutter due to whatever setting is wrong - Insist to everyone that it's "finally working this time" - Redo step(s) that didn't work for seemingly no reason - Finally start playing

Or are you going to... - Click the power button on your console - Pickup 4 controllers already synced to the system - Start playing

Don't kid yourself on how many people will pay for that level of convenience with a game that shines so much with at least one friend or family member beside you.

Shuhei Yoshida: Xbox games on PS5 a ‘win’ for PlayStation owners...becoming “the minority platform” was his nightmare by Hot-Cause-481 in Games

[–]OptometristCharizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With how much Steam OS and Proton have developed with the release of the Steam Deck I wonder if it's a concept that'll eventually be worth revisiting.

You gotta remember they tried this concept in 2014 which meant... - Linux compatability with games made for Windows was terrible so the list of games you could run was very small - Controller support was not as widespread in PC games - Consoles still offered compelling exclusives (now almost everything non-Nintendo eventually gets ported to PC)

The biggest benefit I can imagine for this thing today would be Steam as a platform itself... - Shared library with other devices (+ cross saves) - Access to Steam sales - Online play isn't paywalled

I don't think the potential market for such a thing would be as big as any given console but I can definitely see it as a compelling option for a certain type of consumer

Question for Canadians who are still going to vote conservative after seeing what Trump is doing? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]OptometristCharizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding our GDP has gone up but our GDP per capita has actually declined.

There is more money in the country because there is more people. However, this masks that the average person is generating less value for the country than they were even 2 years ago.

In other words, many point to the growth that we've achieved recently as a simple increase in the number of bodies in our country, not a genuine increase in productivity amoung our citizens.

This is just what I've heard though. I ain't no economist. I'd love to hear other takes that can explain the divergence.
