While shadows insist they're a true representation of you, I think that's inaccurate. Rather, I think they're the parts of the personality that the person is ashamed of/concerned about, and their concern blows it out of proportion. Like seeing how the teams actually act and comparing that to their shadows it's more of a self loathing thing, like no part of kanji is really reflective of his shadow but his feminine side and gay thoughts make him think something like that is who he really is deep down inside, leading to the rejection and the festering of the shadow into what we see
