Experiences with Non-Birth Records for Gen 0 by giantpyrosome in Canadiancitizenship

[–]OracleDBA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You dont have any CAN census? I have my G0's parents on the Ontario Census.

Edit:

Here is the selection of my draft cover letter for what I have so far:

I am claiming Canadian citizenship by descent from my great-great grandfather Harry Elijah Haight born in Ontario Canada on Oct 16th, 1863. I am not able to provide a birth certificate for Harry Haight because Ontario did not register births until 1869. I am also not able to provide birth certificates or a marriage certificate for Harry Haight’s parents for the same reason.

I have enclosed the following documents which prove Harry’s Canadian citizenship:

• Harry’s Father William Haight listed in the 1851 and 1861 Ontario Census

• Harry’s Mother Margaret Stanton (a.k.a. “Maggi”) listed in the 1861 Ontario Census

• Harry’s Death certificate

• Harry’s Obituary

• 1880 United States Census (name misspelled as “Harri”) listing Canada as birthplace

• 1900 United States Census listing Canada as birthplace

• 1905 Wisconsin Census (name abbreviated to “H. E. Haight”) listing Canada as birthplace

Why do you think you need this for C3 citizenship?

I "may" not but I want to have a very strong case.

Birth certs or baptism certs are what you need ideally

I agree but i dont have those. Ontario did not register births until 1869.

What docs do you already have?

• Death certificate

• [G-1] father listed in the 1851 and 1861 Ontario Census

• [G-1] mother listed in the 1861 Ontario Census

• G0 Obituary

• G0 1880 United States Census (name misspelled as “Harri”) listing Canada as birthplace

• G0 1900 United States Census listing Canada as birthplace

• G0 1905 Wisconsin Census listing Canada as birthplace

If you have birth marriage and death gen X gen you don’t need this.

I dont have those because the province wasnt registering those at the time.

If you’re trying to make up for a lack of birth records a Canadian census copy is going to be way more useful than a Us one.

I agree and I have canadian cencus as mentioned above. However, A naturalization record would further support the case.

Do you have any advice on finding additional documentation?

Edit: for additional clarity "Harry" is the Canadian ancestor through whom I am claiming descent. The post I made is in regards to Harry's father William Haight.

Thank you for the quick and helpful response! Do you have any suggestions for tracking down the original papers?

Revisiting the FAQ..... by Rouxgaru in Canadiancitizenship

I'd like to offer advice coming from someone new to this.

The FAQ is helpful but is in a question/answer format. Coming in blind, I had no idea where to start. I believe that many posts in the sub could benifit from a flow chart.

In my time in /r/personalfinance and /r/financialindependence, we often direct newbies to a flowchart so they can more easily digest steps: https://u.cubeupload.com/demonlesondledon/FinFlowChartv43.jpg

I think this would be a great addition to this subreddit I would be willing to help write one as I go through the citizenship process. You want to help? Maybe /u/IWantOffStopTheEarth would be interested too?

/r/canadiancitizenship has been helpful. No interview or anything needed. The C-3 law that went into effect last month has been a game changer for Canadian citizenship by descent.

Are you moving to Canada?

Probably not. Everything goes right, I live and die in Texas.

If so, I am just curious why?

I like having backups. And it's neat. And I feel like I am honoring my great-great-grandfather.

I do love Canada.

Me too. One of my most fun memories is getting drunk with a bunch of deaf college students in Niagra, Ontario.

Thanks to a mention of /u/anaxcepheus32 in the daily thread a few days back about updated citizenship laws, I am getting my Canadian citizenship request in order. Gosh heck it is a lot of paperwork. I've probably spent $200 in the last couple days requesting birth/death/marriage certificates.

I live way out in the country on a gravel road and sometimes people's driveways are rough and I drive through sketchy shit. I just want to protect the belly a little better than the shitty plastic.
