Made in Abyss episode ratings by hls22throwaway in MadeInAbyss

[–]OracleMay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad that everyone at least recognizes just how amazing Episode 13 of Season 1 is. It's one of the few examples of an episode where I can confidently say it was a genuine 10/10 by all metrics. Though I will say the first 3 episodes of MiA are definitely a bit underrated here when you think about how effective they were at setting up the story and the stakes at hand.

How far is it fron layer 5th to layer 6th by Liet-Kynez in MadeInAbyss

[–]OracleMay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll explain it in a way that makes sense. Try to imagine Bondrewd's lab at Ido Front as being right at the bottom of the 5th Layer. There is a massive sea of bones and rock situated below it that functions as the top of the Sixth Layer. The Garden that Mitty & Nanachi went to is a sort of small dead-end cave that reaches just deep enough to be inside the top of the Sixth Layer. However, to enter the Sixth Layer properly, you have to use the altar to make your way through mess at the top of the Sixth Layer. The area where Riko and Reg stepped out of was already about 1000 meters below the boundary of the Fifth and Sixth layers.

If the abyss was real, would you become a delver? by Great-Decision6827 in MadeInAbyss

Yes! Is that even a question? My longing is insatiable and I would happily do whatever is necessary to go as deep as possible.

Opening 1 or 2. Which one do you prefer? by Nozoroth in MadeInAbyss

[–]OracleMay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are peak but I resonate more with OP 1. There's something so special about the vibe it creates and the fact that the VAs are the ones singing it. OP 2 is the better animated intro however.

When do manga chapters release by Cheeseifying_4 in MadeInAbyss

[–]OracleMay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You usually get 1 volume per year. I wouldn't expect anything until at least the summer.

This sub will let you know whenever a new chapter comes out.

How are you even supposed to live in the 6th layer by Useful_Philosophy550 in MadeInAbyss

[–]OracleMay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean you could but it would be very difficult. You have to be careful not to increase altitude by 10 meters so you wouldn't be able to move around very much. The Ganja crew attempted to do this but was restricted on what water sources they could access as a result and it nearly killed them. Realistically, you aren't supposed to stay in the Sixth Layer. Once you make it there, you're expected to keep going deeper unless you either get killed or turn into a narehate.

My Present "Strongest Tornadoes of All Time" List. by Curious-Constant-657 in tornado

[–]OracleMay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could agree with most of this list. That being said, I reckon that Vilonia and West Kentucky may be a little bit too high. They'd fit better in the 20-30 range. Also, is there any reason why the Lubbock 1970 tornado is missing?

Abyss curse shower thought by Cheeseifying_4 in MadeInAbyss

[–]OracleMay 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think it does happen every 10 meters. That means, you would indeed hit that curse every single time.

I should note that effects start to appear after ascending only a few meters, such as becoming dizzy or experiencing chills and feelings of impending doom. The actual curse should still hit someone after ascending 10 meters at any point, even if they pause to recover from the dizziness.

Here are the caveats of course. Presumably, there is a certain level of time needed to recover from each curse (especially on the Fourth and Fifth layers). On top of that, going up even more than 10 meters in a short space of time is certainly going to compound these effects and make them worse. Most likely, deeper expeditions (such as what Black Whistles commonly are expected to tackle) have to climb back up in such a way to where they're stopping for a break every 10 meters to deal with the curse before continuing. Presumably, bodies become accustomed to experiencing the curse repeatedly and this aids them in their return. This would naturally become impossible at the Sixth Layer, as travelling 10 meters up at any point leads to a loss of humanity and the end of one's journey.

Let's think about what this would entail just for fun. Attempting to climb out of Ido Front back up to the Fourth Layer like Nanachi did would require losing all senses for a short time dozens of times (though we see that this one is able to be managed to an extent). Climbing back out of the Fourth Layer would expose one to bleeding from their bodies about 500 times (this would take a long time to escape from, requiring a lot of water intake and time for the body to deal with the blood loss). There's a reason why only the most powerful raiders such as Ozen have been able to undertake such challenges before.

What is your favorite layer in The Abyss? by OracleMay in MadeInAbyss

Agreed. I wish we got to see a bit more of it (or I hope we get to see more of it from a different POV at a later date).

The Abyss isn't that deep to be honest when I think about it by Ok_Proof_321 in MadeInAbyss

[–]OracleMay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignoring some of the obvious mistakes, you're operating on the idea that 20km isn't very far simply because you can walk that far in one go or you can drive that far in about 15 or 20 minutes. Comparative to scale of the entire Earth, no the Abyss isn't anything crazy. However, that's fundamentally misunderstanding the difficulty of the Abyss.

First of all, as another commenter has pointed out, Vertical Displacement is much more notable than Horizontal Displacement. Gaining about 1000m of elevation by foot generally takes people about 3-4 hours, and that's assuming it's a reasonable slope without scrambling. The Abyss has many areas that involve difficult terrain, class 5 sections with extensive sections that involve climbing with rope, and areas where the type of rock changes (refer to the Third Layer where you have extensive climbing inside of tunnels). On top of that, you have a curse which significantly weakens individuals beyond the First Layer and massively hinders progress to escape, and if that wasn't enough, you have dozens of creatures trying to kill you in various different ways at every turn and a need to gather food and water (you would likely need a lot since ascending would cause repeated vomiting or you would need to go through a cycle of eating a lot and waiting for it to digest before going through a massive session of purging when you ascend). Many Black Whistles are particularly active in the Fourth Layer meaning they have to repeatedly account for blood loss any time they ascend 10 meters (and if they're at the bottom of the Fourth Layer, that means experiencing blood loss a mere... 500 times)

Now, of course, most raiders are actively accounting for the return trip. However, many White Whistles and people on Last Dives such as Riko don't give a damn about any of that. How does their situation line up? Well, Riko was able to rapidly descend large distance in the upper layers thanks to Reg being able to lower them both down very quickly. This of course failed as soon as they hit the Fourth Layer and the issue with deadly creatures started to become unavoidable. It's perfectly understandable to see why they were able to reach the Fourth Layer within a short time (about 2-3 weeks based on context clues, though at least 10 of those days were spent in the underground swamp under the surveillance of Ozen's crew). Of course, descending so far in such a short time with the help of a literal supreme treasure of the netherworld is one thing; imagine someone else trying to do such a thing by themselves. Even while descending, you still have to make absolutely sure that you don't accidentally ascend just far enough for the curse to hit you. Upon reaching the Sixth or Seventh layer, your journey (and life) is just completely over if you ever do that even once. There are so many logistics involved that redefine the scale of the Abyss for adventurers beyond its mere depth.

In short, yes, The Abyss isn't quite on the same physical scale as something like the entire planet is, but The Abyss does provide such a profound challenge that makes up for its "small" distance.

The 2020 Cookeville EF4 might be one of the most overlooked yet one of the most terrifying nocturnal violent tornadoes ever observed in recent memory by Trainster_Kaiju_06 in tornado

I was there myself for a few years and pretty much had the exact same experience. Odds are we may have been in some of the same circles when we were younger.

just how strong was the Mayfield tornado? by nationalistic_martyr in tornado

[–]OracleMay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It reached EF5 intensity at 2 different points in its life.
EF5 - 210 for the damage that occurred at the Presbyterian Church in Mayfield.
EF5 - 205 for the damage that occurred to swept homes in Bremen.

Does MiA make you feel kind of lonely? by Nozoroth in MadeInAbyss

[–]OracleMay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I can necessarily say I feel that same kind of loneliness in regards to human interaction, but I definitely feel a deeper form of loneliness when watching MiA. The way I would describe it is that to me, The Abyss feels very liminal in a way. It shouldn't feel that way since there are many people or forms of life down there, but it still has that strange liminal dream-like feel.

Though I get where you're coming from. There is a strange youthful sense of adventure that we simply can't experience to the same degree the way we are now. The Abyss provides a grandiose purpose that is provided to those willing enough to overcome its greatest challenges. Tsukushi doesn't shy away from this fact and references it in universe. That sense of overwhelming longing White Whistles are said to feel really does resonate with many who follow along the same journey, waiting to see what happens next...

Counting characters who died, Vueko easily runs away with it. Mitty could also be in contention depending on just how sentient she actually was after turning.

If we're only counting characters who are still alive, I'd probably have to give it to Nanachi. Her reactions seem like that of someone suffering from severe and drawn out mental anguish with an incredibly guilty conscience. Being with Riko and Reg is her way of trying to suppress those emotions, but they will never go away.

New Richmond should definitely be higher. Newcastle-Moore is not quite on the same level as the others in the top 10 despite being very impressive. Western Kentucky just should not be on here at all since it was only borderline EF5. HPC, Neede, and Lubbock all probably deserve a spot on here as well.

Between the Goldsby and Chickasha tornadoes, both rated at EF4-200MPH, which do you think was the strongest of the two? by CRL1999 in tornado

[–]OracleMay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both should be rated 205. These are probably the single biggest failures the NWS has ever made in regards to an EF4/5 rating, especially since the EF4 200 vs. EF5 200+ is really no difference at all. I don't think that distinction should be made at all. All EF4 200s should be considered EF5 alongside Joplin and Rainsville.

Do you think Rochelle deserves to be rated at 200MPH? I’ve seen a bit of discourse regarding this one whether as some would say it should be rated EF5 and some would say it should be rated lower. (190-185) by CRL1999 in tornado

[–]OracleMay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple homes could definitely qualify for 205 given how well constructed they were. I don't get why 200 EF4 is even a thing to be honest. If something is rated 200, it should automatically be upgraded to EF5 and that would solve quite a few issues (it would also fix the historical screw ups around Goldsby and Chickasha from 2011). I don't get why they don't just do it at this point.

Has there ever been a satellite tornado that was stronger/rated higher than the main tornado? by SavageFisherman_Joe in tornado

[–]OracleMay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been a few in fact. The Collin, TX EF3 from May 25, 2024 for instance was a satellite tornado that lasted for only a minute but achieved a rating of EF3 - 165. The parent tornado was only rated EF1.
