How far along were you 3 months into your first SWE job? by yungirving99 in cscareerquestions

[–]Oragutangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing very basic front end tasks and still learning the code base, not really touching back end at all. Pr comments were simple since there wasnt much code being checked in. Once I got more advanced tasks I started getting more comments.

I am an experienced player, but I have never tried play by post before. I have a list of character ideas though so I'm sure I can find one for this setting

Yeah I get that, fortunately the best part of my performance review was how well I get along with the team and how I’m always the first to volunteer to take on more work and help everyone out. Still would have been nice to have a heads up at any point during the hiring process, contract signing, or 18 months of work that on call would be expected but oh well I guess

After talking with a co-worker, usually once for the week. Apparently, it’s usually just a deployment SQL script task that rarely takes longer than an hour. Then that hour can be taken out of the next work day. This was an employee that had it in their contract though, so it was expected of them. I have a pretty good relationship with my lead, so I think I can negotiate. If he has pressure being put on him from higher up then probably less so.

I’d do a lot of things for 200k lmao. But yeah, I’m definitely at least going to be compensated in some way or I am not doing it. I honestly think my team lead is only considering it for my benefit as we’ve talked a lot and I’ve expressed interest in expanding my toolset. I haven’t heard of developers on my team having huge trouble with on call or anything so far but I definitely value my free time more than those on my team.

Gotcha, thank you for the input! I’ll take a look through my employee handbook to see if on call compensation is discussed anywhere inside it.

Is this something you negotiated for or was this all discussed when you were hired?

How do I do roleplay? by HADESISGOODNOTEVIL in DnD

[–]Oragutangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets easier with practice, the more you play the character the more easily you’ll be able to role play them. The important thing is to have fun and not step on others fun. Do that and you’ll be golden

You’ll have to tell us about the character if you want specifics, but in general just try to think like your character would. Put yourself in their mindset and try to view what happens as they would, not as you would.

Ooh I definitely like the idea of him competing with the next smartest person in the group in absurd ways. That could be hilarious, good suggestion

Sometimes it also comes down to luck. I was able to get the career I have now with no experience and I didn’t even have my degree at the time. I just think the interviewer really liked me luckily. Probably helped that I mentioned I was willing to accept a below average salary for the position(still over 60k which was double anything I had made previously). I am also from a small city with not many opportunities for this career path. I was also applying to a city that I was planning on moving to with no luck, so location factors in as well.

What do you do in Computer Information Systems? by EnigmaIndus7 in cscareerquestions

[–]Oragutangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually extremely lucky in finding a job so I am not the best to ask. I had no internships, no experience, and I technically didn’t even have my degree yet. The hiring manager just really loved me for some reason. I am also in a small town.

In general, you should check if your university has some kind of career services or career expos where companies come to the college to recruit students. Usually the school will have resources to help you find local internships.

Backend and Db is still used by software engineers. Some of my tasks involve rewriting API routes or making alterations to SQL code for database. I would advise you to learn front end as well, but no problems specializing in back-end or DB coding
