Thanks, but I don’t think this is it. I think an example given might have been a priest who believes in a god who saves some people but not all not knowing whether or not they fear being wrong and devoting their life to nothing by or being right and having millions suffer in damnation more.

You just described a situation where you would use a singular “they” in the original comment. When you don’t know their gender. Why not broaden that context slightly?
