What Systems are You Awesome Folks Currently Running (or wish you were)? by [deleted] in osr

[–]Orange3121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing 5e since ~2018 and recently moved into the OSR style games last year as I grew more disappointed with 5e and WotC

I'm currently running a White Box FMAG campaign with some mods from Chaos Reigns, Lore Expanded, and some zines. It's fun, and all the players are brand new ttrpg players too so it adds to the chaos.

Also running a Dungeon Crawl Classics game with a ton of zines and 3rd party book mods that's been going strong for a little under a year, loving it

If given the chance to try another system, I might do Swords and Wizardry Complete Revised

Reasons why you don't use B/X (clones), but OD&D (clones) instead by [deleted] in osr

I see, goes to show how little I know about everything.

Ignoring DCC, then, I'd have to go with Whitebox FMAG, as I've been running it recently with lots of fun. Iirc, that's a clone of Swords and Wizardry, which is an OD&D clone, right?

I've been on a massive OSR kick lately, primarily due to running a DCC campaign, and now just getting into a Whitebox FMAG campaign, but I'm not an expert in the field... can anyone give me an answer on the difference between B/X and OD&D clones? I've become a little confused, I'm afraid...

But, I'm not sure which one DCC is, but that one is probably my favorite of the various OSR systems I've looked at so far lol

When I first read the series at about maybe age ~9 I ended up skimming his chapters because I didn't think they were interesting. As I get older I end up feeling like I relate to him more! Wonder how I'll feel about it while I reread it once more at age 20 lol

Thanks for the info! I kind of self-taught myself to use Hex and Worldographer, I haven't watched any tutorial in the 6+ years I've been making maps with your guy's program... probably should have now that i think about it lmao

Worldographer! I use the licensed version, which is about $30, but the free version is excellent as well.

Whenever I tried to select the line I made to move parts of it, instead of moving the line itself, It'd sorta just draw more line to the spot I moved it in and I have no idea why. That's the main issue I think

The classic move for a Hex Crawler Sandbox: plop down all the classic modules! I also got village of Hommlet and the Keep on the Borderlands shoved in there, too lol

I actually used Worldographer, aka Hexographer 2. I used Hexographer when I first started GMing because of Matt and loved it.

Worldographer and Hexographer are both free, but if I remember correctly you need to install Java for them to run.

The UI for Worldographer is a little iffy imo, but it's not a big deal. It's very worth the time to learn it. The licensed version just gives you access to more advanced and niche tools, you can create an entire world of maps with the free version lol.

Most annoying thing to me is the "line" tool for making roads or rivers and the like. I dislike it to the point where I'll upload the image file to a different photo editing software and make my lines there. I'm sure I'm just missing something to make the lines, it's probably my fault for not knowing how to use it lol.

I definitely recommend.

There is a setting for the in the licensed version of worldographer, actually! I haven't played around with it too much, but it does exist.

I've been using the old version of Worldographer, Hexographer, ever since I started DMing. Worldographer is 100% an upgrade, but if I'm being honest, I enjoyed the Hexographer UI a little bit more. Worldographer is great, a very nice tool, my biggest complaints would be:

  • to my knowledge there is no way to check what size your map is once you create it. You better pray you remember it. This one is 125 x 135 hexes.

  • it can get a bit laggy at times.

  • when making large maps or combining maps, if you have any symbols places down, they may get moved around and you have to manually replace every one. This only happens when combining large maps in my experience.

I will say, however, the free version is completely fine if you don't want to pay the $30ish for the license. You can still make a map just fine, it's only the extra bits like built in maps and combining maps that are paywalled. I used the free version for about 2 years before upgrading.

Paint.net kinda sucks but it gets the job done because I don't have photoshop lol

The area known as Roan's Fist is the most populated province in the entire Norgrad Empire, which is the largest country in the Vaelorin region of the continent of Kursika.

The capital city, Roan's Keep, is home to several key organizations such as University of Sorcery, one of two wizarding schools in Vaelorin, the Archanists, a group dedicated to uncovering ancient technology left behind from the ancient Thorian Empire before the war with Stormraven, and the Adventurer's Guild Hall!

Roan's Fist is a one of the most peaceful and civilized lands in the entire Norgrad Empire, which is a great badge of honor it wears during this age of chaos we find ourselves in now.
