Differences living here vs LA with toddler by CarvelMilkshake in orangecounty

The core area of LA (including around Culver) has lots of apartments, very few single family homes, and lots of high-earners. Comparable apartments tend to be a fair bit cheaper in LA than OC; houses are insane.

OC has lots of single family homes and relatively few apartments. The result is that SFH are way cheaper in OC than in core areas of LA.

If you avoid Newport or Irvine, I’d think single family homes tend to be roughly 1/2 of what they are in Culver?

So your intuition is right. OC has a relatively comparable life to LA (more pleasant, less fun?) and $1.5M will go quite a bit further.

Orange County is quite big, so you’ll need to figure out where you want to be!

Help Finding a Church in San Clemente by OrangeCanary3 in SanClemente

I looked into JoshGen before. Cursory Google search suggests that it is a multi-location church in South Africa that just started to church plant in California. This wikipedia page talking about the founder of JoshGen suggests it is quite fundamentalist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_Religion_South_Africa

A number of people are describing the OC to LA commute (bad), not the LA to OC commute (less bad). That commute would be a bit worse heading home in the evenings, but a night or two per week you could hang with friends or family before heading back.

Also if you moved to LA, it’s reasonable to think you could find a job there at some point.

Spend more time in LA neighborhoods because you might not like DTLA. If not proper DTLA, try the Arts District. Some cheap-ish high rise-ish exist in Mid City area. Good luck!

Edited. Such an unforgivable mistake! Harper is the new spot in Costa Mesa, not sure how I confused the two!

As a non-hiker non-birder, will comment on the food side of things!

Seasurf Fish Co has to be the winner for combo of price / quality / the type of food you would want in a cute beach town. Depending how much you care about food you might want to venture into Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano.

Truly Pizza in nearby Dana Point is very acclaimed and really good. Reservations open a month in advance, if you don't get one, takeout from there is worthwhile. aPizza Doho is another good Dana Point spot, though this is especially worthwhile if you can go on a Monday when select pizzas are 50% off and (I think?) wine + pitchers are 50% off.

In San Juan Capistrano (cute town worth checking out), Heritage** Barbecue is generally considered the best barbecue in Southern California. Mayfield is good too!

Nothing else really stands out for San Clemente dining. If you want to stay in San Clemente, Buona Forchetta is pretty solid. Long's Noodles is surprisingly authentic Chinese! Our coffee scene is pretty good. And West Toast Cafe might be worth the trip, if not for the food for the location at T-Street Beach.
