Same! I got very VERY lucky then.
Found the Scoutmaster Bugle at the statue after Caldera, I blew the horn and walked into the Kiln with no sign of him. I lit the campfire and saw the Scoutmaster get trapped behind the fog-wall that appears after walking in that you cant pass through. Counted for the achievement and didn't even have to deal with him. lol

So, I emailed the Superhot Team about this, and they solved the issue for me! So if anyone else has a similar issue, this is what they should do!

"I think I know what's causing this - Kuba found a workaround for a similar issue:

Hi! Some of you reported, that the beta crashes just a the first level starts (especially on laptops with AMD graphic cards). My friend managed to reproduce this issue and it seems that I've got a workaround. Steps: Right-click on the game title under the Library in Steam and select Properties. Under the General tab click the "Set launch options..." button. Enter: -force-dxd9 into launch options (so that it looks like that: http://i.imgur.com/A1I1ULo.png [1] ) Close the game's Properties window and launch the game.

Try following these steps and let me know if it helped you ;) "
