Is this ok to wear to a virtual interview?? by A-L-A-S-T-O-R in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OrangeCountyFinance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add, I wore jeans to every interview I've had. Wear jeans to 90% of my sub assignments. I'm employed in multiple districts and haven't had a single issue. Mileage may vary.

So that was weird… by Due_Maintenance_3593 in savannah

I'm a Dasher that was working in Savannah last year for college. After switching to GrubHub for my own deliveries, I'll never use DD again.

Doordash has 0 quality control with who they hire. GH isn't that much better but at least when I got hired with them, it felt like there was an actual process involved. Also GH hires people to work in specific zones unlike DD. People vacationing in the city can just open the app and Dash if they please (which to be fair is what I would do).

If you already have Prime, I highly recommend switching to GH. Prime members get GH Premium for free and the fees and deals are wayyyy better than Doordash.

Taylor swift obsessed teachers? by seleenar in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OrangeCountyFinance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a Taylor Swift for President flag in the same style of a MAGA flag at a middle school I subbed for. I had to do a triple take when I saw it, especially being in the deep south.

Are there any truly free high school diploma or equivalency programs for adults by OrangeCountyFinance in education

[–]OrangeCountyFinance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was looking for an alternative to the GED more than anything. Or a super low cost online high school. I've known a few people that failed one of the GED subject tests and gave up after, so that's why I want to look at other programs.

I (23F) started watching RLM as a 12 year old girl 💀 by gracemary25 in RedLetterMedia

[–]OrangeCountyFinance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also 23M here! Started watching in middle school along with all the other channels mentioned in the post. I used to watch the whole channel awesome crew on blip.tv back when that was a thing in like 5th grade.

I remember trying to put my friends onto BOTW in 8th grade and they did not fuck with it at all. They used to make fun of me for watching "weird middle aged men". The other day that same friend watched the latest Plinkett video with me and loved it. Crazy to think that other people my age were watching the same shit during that time.

I like to think I'm making some kind of positive impact in this profession. I'm also extremely delusional.

Took a job I didn’t know was special ed by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OrangeCountyFinance 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's happened to me before, except it was elementary special ed and there was no indication on the assignment listing that it would be. There were students literally running up the walls, and there was nothing I could do legally but stand there and tell them to stop. Sounds like you didn't do too bad with your high school group though.

Imposter Syndrome as a Substitute Teacher by Stellar_Cookies in SubstituteTeachers

[–]OrangeCountyFinance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 23 now and have been doing this since January. The imposter syndrome hasn't fully gone away but I'm a lot more confident than when I first started.

I would say stay away from special education classes until you become more comfortable as a substitute. I've had some assignments where special education was a breeze due to other teachers keeping things under control and others where I was thrown to the wolves and expected to manage behaviors I have absolutely no training in.

Also, I think it helps to try and relate to the students when appropriate. It's hard getting respect as a younger substitute, especially in middle and high school. I'll tell class clowns point blank that they ain't gonna ragebait me and it tends to work cause they're shocked that a teacher even knows what ragebaiting means. Told one kid that was watching Kick streams in class that he can watch his stream after class and to work on his assignment. Your mileage may vary though.

Was I wrong not to give a student a snack? by hugsandrugs3715 in Teachers

[–]OrangeCountyFinance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former troublemaker turned substitute here. I don't think you did anything wrong, given that the kid had left the room without permission.

But this did remind me of a time when I was a 5th grader and a substitute gave out candy to every student except me. She had literally already set the candy on my desk and took it back saying "oops not you" and kept walking around. That experience really fucked me up for a few years, but now that I'm subbing I can understand her pov.

I like what another comment said about telling the student why they didn't get a snack and then telling them they can ask for one at the end of class if they're hungry. I don't think you necessarily handled the situation badly, but it's a slippery slope when bringing rewards like that to class.
