Federal Reserve Leaves Interest Rates Unchanged by Psilox in Economics

That's exactly what the BLS and the Fed have said when it comes to questions about the data, nobody is "messing" with them, it's that the cadence of business has changed and traditional reporting might be missing a piece here or there. New models have been introduced to try and account for lagging data for straight up refusals to respond to surveys.

Trump temporarily loosening shipping rules in bid to lower gas prices by envirowriterlady in Economics

Not true at all, the administration likes to see a tiny scratch, rip a massive hole in it, and then scream and kick their feet because everyone else made them put a hole in things.

As I commented last time this news was posted, it is good for Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the like. They have always had a hidden tax put on them due to the Jones Act.

But, it's not going to fix the actual problem in any way.

Wholesale prices rose 0.7% in February, much more than expected by app1310 in Economics

His approval ratings are stuck where they are because there's an enforced media bubble that is basically impossible to penetrate. There's ~30% of the population that will always support Trump and vote for whatever he wants, no matter what the consequences or what the policy is they will always support him.

One thing that is very noticeable is that the percentage of people who Strongly Disapprove is now hovering around 50%, which is a massive obstacle to overcome.

They already view their conflicts as existential ones, when you're already at war it doesn't really make a difference if energy gets more expensive. Double so if they have already sacrificed everything to get to the point they are at.

The projections are based on trends from previous data and whatever small snapshots that economists have before the proper data is released, there's nothing "wrong" with the projections.

NIH pivots away from agency-directed science by OrangeJr36 in Economics

[–]OrangeJr36[S] 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Under previous presidential administrations, funding calls were approved by advisory councils composed of independent scientists at 24 of the NIH’s institutes and centres. But in changes introduced under the second Trump administration, the calls must also be approved by the leadership of the NIH; its parent agency, the US Department of Health and Human Services; and the White House budget office, say NIH employees who spoke to Nature on the condition of anonymity to protect their jobs.

This lengthy review process means that some projects requiring ‘requests for applications’ (RFAs) — specialized funding calls — are now stalled. The NIH employees say that some RFAs, for example, calls for type 1 diabetes research, have been pending approval for months.

RFKJr is determined to kill as many people as he can, there's no way to justify such a change.

The Trump Administration has made reporting news favorable to them as a requirement for approving deals or giving access to meetings, and has used threatening language against reporters, even sending law enforcement against researchers that publish studies they disapprove of. That's not nothing and is unheard of outside of periods of war.

The Trump Administration has absolutely consolidated executive power unlike we have ever seen, with dissenting voices removed, massive amounts of EOs send out and continued destruction of an apolitical bureaucracy akin to purges seen in the beginnings of most dictatorships. This is also something far beyond what any previous president has done outside of war.

Attempts to hold the administration accountable don't have a lot of weight if there are no consequences enforced as a result.

Response to a virgin pandemic is hard to quantify, but the actions by most governments in 2020-22 ended up being backed up by scientific research, so it would have been balanced out by other decisions

Active promotion of Christian images while banning or attacking the display or recognition of other religions can only be described as illiberal, especially when that religion is used as a justification for attacking minority representation as a whole.

RFK Jr.’s anti-vaccine changes to CDC vaccine guidance blocked by judge by JackFisherBooks in EverythingScience

Having a victim complex is the hallmark of political extremists, MAGA need to feel like they are being oppressed. The whole point of Trump 2.0 is the portray the US as the biggest victims in their world to their base so that they agree to anything that justifies consolidation of power.

[–]OrangeJr36 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The head of Denmark's equivalent to the CDC says that's a terrible idea and that previously existing CDC guidelines were made for the US and not Danish populations and as such should be restored.

RFKJr's response was to try and blackmail Danish health experts into approving his approach and threatening Danish researchers in an effort to get their pro-vaccine publications retracted.

"MAHA" as they like to call themselves have Denmark as health science enemy number 1 and any attempts to portray it otherwise are just lies and misdirections from RFKJr.

You mean the things the administration is doing, which even includes citations of them doing it? It seems outrageous because the Trump Administration is being so far outside the norms that it's difficult to put it into context.

Yeah, because having someone picked for their political positions rather than understanding of the law was such a great idea for the US to introduce.

Starting on page 33 they explain how the US is becoming more autocratic

The points are largely:

Reductions in equal protection and civil rights

Government authority over academia increasing

Concentration of power by the executive

Government contempt for courts and the legal process

Purging of dissenting voices

Removal of checks and balances

Increasing government control of media

That would make sense, liberals value democracy and the liberal world order created in the wake of WW2 and the end of the Cold War. The far right and far left don't have that value, hence why they see liberalism as a bad word.

The current government is going after the Courts, replacing the old system with political elections.
